New Hampshire Union Leader endorses Christie
Source: WDSU
(CNN) Chris Christie's struggling presidential campaign got a much-needed boost Saturday night when the influential New Hampshire Union Leader endorsed the New Jersey governor.
"Gov. Christie is right for these dangerous times," the paper's publisher Joseph McQuaid wrote in an editorial. "He has prosecuted terrorists and dealt admirably with major disasters. But the one reason he may be best-suited to lead during these times is because he tells it like it is and isn't shy about it."
"Other candidates have gained public and media attention by speaking bluntly. But it's important when you are telling it like it is to actually know what you are talking about," the editorial added, a reference to the governor's trademark brashness that helped launch him to national fame.
The endorsement comes at a crucial moment for the Christie campaign. The New Jersey governor, who previously pursued terror cases as U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, is getting renewed attention in the wake of the Paris terror attacks, which have moved national security issues into the 2016 spotlight.

The Union Leader is a Republican newspaper. This has NOTHING to do with organized labor!

Last time around they endorsed Newt.

They may have endorsed Bush the Frat Boy, too, but he never won a presidential election.

(10,500 posts)the New Hampshire Primary.
McCain won in 2008 and Pat Buchanan won in 1996 after receiving the paper's endorsement.
Reagan won in 1980 and Nixon won in 1968 after getting the endorsement. I think those are the only two who went on to win the presidency.

(14,591 posts)It might be in Manchester, but in the Lakes region no one reads it. When I go to the store there's always a big stack of them unsold. Some of the smaller stores don't carry it because they have no buyers.
It's considered a joke here in the state.

(6,125 posts)You're right. In fact, they almost filed for bankruptcy a few years ago. They do have a monopoly on local news and people always go to the obits! Not many people who actually read the paper will read the editorials. Good grief.

(2,382 posts)... that has spewed the malicious vitriol that defines conservatism for as long as I can remember. I used to live on the northeastern coast of Massachusetts, which on the outer perimeter of its distribution area. Conservatives read it; decent people lined litter boxes with it.

(86,765 posts)They are so far out in their field that only RWNJs can see them. I grew up in New England ME, NH, MA and discovered that rag when my dad started bringing it home when I was a teen. They are so much in the fascist mode that in some ways one might even call them a template for the TP and their ilk.
Shameful rag. In this day and age an endorsement by them is more a death sentence for GE than anything positive.

(86,765 posts)that's been around for too long. Looking at their web site, they don't even have an "about us" page touting their history or date of establishment.
I used to use it to clean the windows in the house, my dad used to bring it home... he was a RWer after JFK was killed and had all kinds of RW crap all over the house including John Birch Soc. shit.

(11,093 posts)"Union" part of the name aside, original publisher William Loeb and his wife Nackey Loeb ran the paper for years and it was unabashadly Republican. They've both passed, a few years for Nackey (William went a bit earlier) and the paper, in my opinion, has chilled a little bit. That said, if you really want an independent paper, you should look at the Concord Monitor.
I don't give the Union Leader a lot of credence, but they apparently have the spotlight. At least Chris Christie is reasonable (as opposed to Trump or Cruz).
