Anonymous recently promised to share the results of its latest apparent act of vigilante activism, by sharing a list of “up to 1000? Ku Klux Klan members and affiliates with the public. The information dump was scheduled for Nov. 5 — or Guy Fawkes day, a kind of Christmas and Fourth of July all rolled up in one for the online activist collective. But then, what appeared to be lists of names, phone numbers, and emails from that very same information cache suddenly appeared online early. Was the leak already underway?

Although the seeming dump, rolled out in multiple Pastebin files, was picked up widely, there was virtually no verified information accompanying the leak. One anonymously posted Pastebin file said it contained the names of several elected officials who were “associated with either kkk or racist related,” including four U.S. senators and several city mayors.

One of the elected officials on the list was mayor Madeline Rogero of Knoxville, Tenn., who released a strongly-worded statement denying that she was affiliated with the KKK, and seemingly baffled that she’d end up on a list like that in the first place:

“For reasons unfathomable to me or anyone who knows me, my name is on the list.” Rogero wrote on Facebook .....

I would say it got "punked" not muddled, and so did four Republican Senators and others less deserving, and a lot of people got duped along the way. If everyone who got duped recs this, we'll be replacing that big lie thread as top thread real fast.

real list comes out on the 5th. They know they are on it and by putting a bunch of false names on one KKK mailing list and then releasing it they have cover. The list that came out today is so badly scrapped together it screams BS.

You have to wonder about the hype's utility when this happens though. Media attention isn't easy to grab, and this may just add attention where we aren't supposed to be looking.

My impression at the end of the day, for every one person who knows what happened today, dozens saw the "Republicans = KKK" message and went on to the next meme or soundbite without batting an eye. "Republicans = KKK" .... What else is new, right? Not a good day for Republicans once again and, who knew, not all anons are anon.

that the mayor of our city in Indiana was listed. I worked on his campaign when he was on city council, and have followed his career as mayor. I cannot believe this is true. It's a tough fight here in NE Indiana to keep any Democrats elected and this was not a good thing.

They tend to do things that help the left, i.e. their involvement in thwarting Rove in 2012.

And to tell you the truth, if they out KKK members with appropriate documentation, who on the left could be against getting those racists exposed?

Albeit, "our" poser and also related to a donate button...

What I expect to see from this is which police officers are KKK members, not which members of Congress.

Congressman know how to keep their racism secret, Joe Wilson excepted.
