LINCOLN The ACLU of Nebraska wants a federal prosecutor to investigate Nebraska officials for their continuing efforts to obtain a foreign-made lethal injection drug that cant be legally imported.
State officials are trying to import sodium thiopental from India, despite at least five communications from federal agencies stating the drug is prohibited from entering the country, according to documents the ACLU got through a public records request.
"It appears that despite all warnings from federal agencies, the state of Nebraska is continuing to move forward on their plan to have illegal drugs sent into the U.S.," said Amy Miller, the ACLU state legal director, in a letter sent Thursday to U.S. Attorney Deb Gilg.
Miller noted that, as recently as July 31, Nebraska officials sent customs forms to the broker in India, to whom they paid $54,400 to buy two lethal injection drugs.
