Scott Walker Fumbles On America's Race Issue
And he's governor of one of the states that's the worst for black people.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker dodged a question about racial tensions during Thursday's GOP debate.

Well, the Black Lives Matter movement got a brief mention during the main Fox News 2016 GOP debate Thursday. When Megyn Kelly asked about a solution to the "biggest civil rights issue of our time," Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) dodged the question.

"Well, I think the most important thing we can do when it comes to policing -- it's something you've had a guest on who's a friend of mine, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke, who's talked to me about this many times in the past -- it's about training," he said of the tense relationship between the black community and the police.

"It's about making sure that law enforcement professionals, not only on the way into their positions but all the way through their time, have the proper training, particularly when it comes to the use of force," he continued. "And that we protect and stand up and support those men and women who are doing their jobs in law enforcement. And for the very few that don't, that there are consequences to show that we treat everyone the same here in America.".......................

................ Milwaukee is one of the most segregated cities in the nation.

During his time as governor, Walker defunded a program that tracked the race of people stopped by police and he proposed an $8 million budget to expand jails. He also bypassed police unions when he cracked down on other unions.

Also--if I recall correctly--during his first year he cut a good program whereby some non violent prisoners were eligible for early release (a program where they had to work--I forget the details but recall folks being upset because the program worked

He also did not answer the question by Kelly --Would you oppose abortion if the mother would die (paraphrasing)? I am trying to find a write up on that question.

1. My family tells me that Madison

is bad, too. It is a liberal city, but the black people there are treated very badly. It is segregated, and the police have a terrible relationship with the black community.

10. Years ago intergration was a way out for many POC but I am not sure that is possible anymore.

First of all it was not an answer for all POC who did not want to move to some other location away from family and friends.

And now who can afford to buy a house in some exclusive neighborhood? So now we need to come up with solutions that help the people where they are at. Kind of like neighborhood building.

IMO that will happen through the vote. In example since Ferguson MO is a predominantly black community they need to vote to control it. Once that is done then help from the outside is critical to changing other aspects. But once in control of their own community they get to decide the changes needed. They get to hire the police, the teachers, etc.

as long as people can live where they like.

I can understand having neighborhood and community pride. I like seeing ethnic communities in cities. Neighborhood building can be a good thing.

have the power to act. I truly believe that the "little person" has it in her/him self to find that way out of this mess - if they are given the chance. Obstructing the vote is one of the most destructive ways to keep change from happening. And I am not forgetting that one of the ways the white police forces do this is through violence and mass incarceration.

2. Scott Walker has a vacant look on his face, a flaw the Kochs cannot correct.

He also has a vacancy in his head. But I can't blame Scott entirely, he is only following orders.

3. I'll give Walker a little partial credit

for a partial answer. Better training, and consequences for not following that training, is absolutely a small piece of the problem. But again, Bernie wins the day with suggesting that lack of economic opportunity is the big motivator among young black men who turn to crime.

4. Yeah, but that's beside the point of the question in which Kelly specified

"overly-aggressive police officers targeting young African Americans" as the problem, not black men committing crimes.

If I understand correctly, BLM is a response to LEOs killing black Americans over minor "crimes." It's about selective and deadly enforcement of laws. People break the law frequently, but most often nothing happens to them. Jaywalking, speeding, pot smoking, illegal gambling, etc.

6. Absolutely. Proper training would solve a lot of this. No discipline begets more abuse

Its just like a football team thats poorly coached; they get way more penalties than other teams and it hurts them.

get into the race. I was frustrated the day he did. He is, in my opine the one to beat be it Bernie or Hillary. He has some good poliices--some the Dems would learn from like the ones you mentioned. Plus it is OHIO

about that the fact that he cares anything about the issue of police/sentencing reform at all. The fact is that Walker, like the rest of the Republicans, doesn't think that there's anything wrong with the policing of minority communities in the US. His record of putting more black men per capita in the criminal justice system than any other state speaks for itself.

DUers should keep this in mind the next time that they claim real systemic racism is much worse in Southern states like Texas. It happens everywhere in the US.
