Clinton, Trump chat fuels conspiracy theories
Source: MSNBC
Just a few weeks ago, Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-Fla.), raised a bizarre conspiracy theory. As the Miami congressman told a local radio show, maybe Donald Trumps entire presidential campaign is an elaborate scheme cooked up by Democrats to make Republicans look ridiculous and undermine the GOP.
Curbelos theory seemed a little over the top, but hes not the only one whos floated the idea. After this Washington Post report was published late yesterday, the conspiracy theorists felt a degree of vindication.
Former president Bill Clinton had a private telephone conversation in late spring with Donald Trump at the same time that the billionaire investor and reality-television star was nearing a decision to run for the White House, according to associates of both men. Four Trump allies and one Clinton associate familiar with the exchange said that Clinton encouraged Trumps efforts to play a larger role in the Republican Party and offered his own views of the political landscape.
The article added that the former president, according to the sources close to Trump, listened intently to the Republicans ideas, and then analyzed Trumps prospects and his desire to rouse the GOP base.
NBC News confirmed soon after that the conversation took place in late May, before Trump formally announced his candidacy. There are apparently some disagreements over the specific details Clintons office, for example, said the former president and Trump had a casual conversation that did not relate to the 2016 race but for those who see Trump as a Democratic plant, the particulars are less important than the call itself.

The fact that this secret plan is getting exposed on MSNBC proves that they want us to know about it in order to discredit the conspiracy theory. Or something like that.

(43,049 posts)I've said before that I could see Clinton mentioning to Trump that he's the perfect candidate. Trump's monumental ego takes it from there.
After all, if Bill Clinton thinks he's a good prospect as President, who is Trump to argue...
Stranger things have happened.

But limiting discourse isn't the answer. Challenging and debate is. There shouldnt be free speech zones or categories. And who gets to make that decision to censor or place a comment?

Otherwise, they are just propaganda outlets passing on half truths, at best.
Free speech does not mean the media can say any damn thing they want, or just make shit up. That is FOX news territory, and require a hire standard from others.

(5,082 posts)Please publish that private photo of Bill with Bush Sr at his private BBQ at their Kennebumport, Maine retreat. You know...the 1982 or 83 pic with Gov Wallace. Bill has always been an honorary Bush family member and was selected by Bush as the Democrat to run against himself in '92 once Perot jumped in to stop Bush. These aren't conspiracy theories.

(5,082 posts)They spend their time looking around to see if it ok to have an opinion before they have it. These are the same types that didn't believe the Lusitania had hidden arms and contraband. They are the same types that deny genocide of the Armenians...the dame types that denied the holocaust was happening as it occurred. Once consensus reality approves of an opinion then they accept it. They only acknowledged the holocaust after the war and the proof was irrefutable. These "Coincidence Theorists" remind me of so-called patriots that wrap themselves in the flag and whip out meaningless phrases about God and Country everytime they don't like a fact...just like people who can't analyze properly throw out labels like Tin Foil hat. These fools do realize that there are over 500,000 people in prison on conspiracy charges alone right? By their perspective none of these crimes ever actually happened and the prisons should let open their gates.

(55,745 posts)KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine (July 30, 1983) -- Wallace and his third wife, the former Lisa Taylor, meet with Vice President George Bush and Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton at a lobster bake at Bush's residence at Kennebunkport, Maine, July 30, 1983. The third Mrs. Wallace, whom the governor married in 1981, was 30 years his junior and half of a country-western singing duo, Mona and Lisa, who had performed during his campaign in 1968.

George Wallace did all he could to oppose President Kennedy and his administration's policy to integrate public schools, including the University of Alabama.
Something else important to know: Wallaces running mate in 1968 was Gen. Curtis LeMay, who exhibited insubordination to President Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Now I don't know what it all means, but in a democracy I believe it's not only my right to know, it's my responsibility to know. That way, I can know who stands for what. And I can vote for the best human being for office -- or even run for the job myself.

(90,677 posts)What do you want? Politicians get together with politicians -- or at least they used to do that before everything in DC got so toxic no one would talk to anyone else for fear of getting cooties.
billhicks76
(5,082 posts)When its Bush its bad but when its Clinton its ok. This isnt in DC! This isnt a cocktail party there. This is a very private get together all way up in Maine where only CLOSE allies ever discuss deals. This is the Bush Family estate. The Clintons pretended they were adversaries of the Bushes all the way until 2001 after which they dropped the facade once GW was installed. Go watch the '91 PBS Roundtable Primary Debate where Gov. Jerry Brown was publicly threatened by Bill. Jerry had a photo thrown on the big screen of Bill and Sam Nunn inspecting one of the first private prison boot camps that would later become a ruinous staple of our declining country. All the prisoners were Black, shackled in series together and wearing striped garments. It literally looked like it was out of the early 1900s. And Clinton and Nunn appeared horribly like Nazi guards inspecting a work camp. Very bad optics politically. Bill turned beet red and waved his finger at Jerry saying verbatim," You have no idea what you're messing with Jerry." It was obvious to those who understood Bush Sr' history what that meant.
And Bill had just appeared out of nowhere as the "insurgent" candidate although he was the most conservative. Perot was entering the race as a third party candidate to derail Bush as he understood Bush's fostering of cocaine routes to supply the Contras with cash. Bush had his VP office put in charge of drug interdiction on the Southern border but all that did was knock out competition and allow the Contras to facilitate more importation for "the cause". Perot was a tyrant and a rabid anti-drug warrior who actually believed the things that Republicans supposedly stood for like patriotism and moral character which Bush just pretended to be. It was obvious a Democrat could win without even a plurality and thats where old friend Bill stepped in as the chosen backup candidate by the national security establishment in case former CIA Director Bush lost after 8 years of being in power. Clinton let Bush Sr off for IranContra crimes which was a real concern and paved the way for that entire administration to return in 2000 with GW.
But apologists and naysayers just cant handle the responsibility the truth brings with itself. We ended up with 911, the Patriot Act, two wars in the Middle East and the financial collapse because of that chain of events. The Clintons and Bushes are close allies, friends and indeed family. The Clintons have been given the RARE title of honorary family member by the Bushes with no reluctance to receive it. And because of this we are slowly being prepared for the inevitable Clinton/Bush general election again. It's vile, repulsive, corrosive and threatening to our democracy but those who dont think critically are paving the way for it...again. Trump is a joke...he is only there to make Jeb appear more moderate and also take attention away from Paul who is the only one on their side unapproved by the military contractors and national security surveillance establishment. Jeb becomes the 'reasonable' candidate and Hillary the inevitable Democratic selection as Wall St wins either way with both sides covered. Wall St is in the business of death and suffering no matter what white collars they wear. What happens with Bernie will truly be an eye opener...I pray for his safety if he starts getting more traction.

One would think that crazy but Wall St and Hillary and the Bushes are banking on our collective naïveté and memory loss. Trump is there to make Jeb appear more moderate. And yes they are this smart...why aren't we?

(56 posts)There is no doubt in my mind that Trump is being pushed by the media to distract the people from the man who they truly fear in this election, the man who is attracting crowds of 10,000+ at his rallies ...Bernie Sanders!
Bernie Sanders is simply THE MOST formidable candidate that the Republicans could ever come up against. That is why FOX and most news media are ignoring the revolution that is happening right underneath them. Here we are, with a pulsating groundswell - and FOX and other news media refuse to acknowledge it. There is TRUE POWER in Bernie Sanders, they see it, they recognise it, his history proves it and it frightens them - beyond belief.
Their solution is to ridicule it, ignore it and passively encourage Hillary Clinton as their preference. They want to give him as little oxygen as possible in the hope of suffocating him now, before his message reaches too far, too wide, before it inspires too many.
The Republicans and the MSM are portraying Bernie Sanders as an "irrelevant fringe candidate", and by pouring attention on to Trump they are merely diverting attention from the BIG story of of the primaries.... Bernie Sanders

Juror #7 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: The picture on the front of the minion puts this one over the top, as well as the echoing of RW talking point leaving out the word "Democratic" - Bernie Sanders has repeatedly included this word in his description of himself, so to leave it out is a RW tactic.
Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

(631 posts)I'm a Bernie fan, and donator to his campaign. I'm not offended by the minion cartoon. Bernie has and will suffer through a lot more ridicule than this. Hiding such a cartoon implies that there is something truthful about it that embarrasses us. Not true.
Besides, I can see Bernie getting a kick out of it.
