Chattanooga (United States) (AFP) - Four Marines were killed Thursday in twin shootings at US military centers in the southern state of Tennessee, officials said, opening a probe into what they said was a possible act of "domestic terrorism."
At least two people were injured during the incidents in Chattanooga -- a police officer and a Marine Corps recruiter. The gunman was shot dead, city mayor Andy Berke told reporters.
The incident served as an ugly reminder of other deadly shootings at US military installations, including a 2009 rampage at Fort Hood that left 13 dead and a 2013 attack at the Navy Yard in Washington that left 12 dead.
"It is incomprehensible to see what happened and the way that individuals who proudly serve our country were treated," Berke said, praising the quick response by law enforcement to prevent further loss of life.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) At least two military facilities in Tennessee were attacked in shootings Thursday, including one at a Navy recruiting building, officials said.
Chattanooga police said in a tweet Thursday afternoon that the active shooter situation was over, though there was no word on what had happened to the suspect or suspects.
Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke said at a news conference that it was a "very terrible situation." He did not release any other details. Berke said there's "an officer down" at a military reserve center.
Police have set up a command post near one of the sites. It was not immediately clear how many people may have been hurt.

(3,962 posts)carry them concealed or openly in military installations. And if your a quarters are the barracks (Dorms if you are Air Force) your weapon must be kept in your unit's arms room.
So no, the good guys with guns don't have ready access to their own guns or to the government's guns.
The only exception are military police on duty and not every installation has them.
Perhaps this terrorist act will lead to change, but I doubt it. If it turns out the shooter was directed or inspired by ISIL, or any other terrorist group, I hope (but do not expect) that the dead and wounded Marines are entitled to Purple Hearts and they, or their surviving families, receive the same benefits as another battlefield casualties.
What I expect is that this will drag on like the Fort Hood victims and that the incident will be called "workplace violence" but I really hope I'm wrong on this point.

(5,455 posts)Oh and FYI for you, since you don't seem to know yourself, the average US Navy sailor doesn't use guns on a daily basis in the performance of the duties and even if there were firearms at this naval reserve center, they would be locked up in the armory. Not available to the people at the naval reserve center.

So without substantial facts of any sort, she decides to trot out the good guys with guns meme.
Oh and if the Marines at the reserve center are anything like the Army National Guard, the weapons are locked in a vault and aren't accessible.

(1,274 posts)No, a Naval Reserve Center is where the squids are. There are also bubble heads, rotor tops, and deck apes. In this case there were also four gyreens who did not survive.
As for the four murdered Marines, they were just lounging around at the Naval Reserve Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee on a Thursday afternoon. Finding themselves in a combat situation was the furthest thing on their minds. If they had had just a moment's notice of Mohammad's intentions; the outcome would have been significantly different. A Marine without a gun is not the same as an unarmed Marine.
It is refreshing however that at least you think that one branch of the service is the "good guys".

IMO, these RW jihadists loyal to irrational GOP leaders more closely match the paranoia of the RW jihadists loyal to Islamic terrorism's leaders.

(1,134 posts)There are lots of mentally ill people out there who are feeding their delusions with that stuff. I'm actually surprised that there are so many of those people out there. Certain RW media outlets are exploiting the crazy in those people by somewhat validating their crazy conspiracies. Even the governor of Texas played into this by saying he was going to have the state guard monitor the US Army. The way these people put politics above all else is the most disturbing thing ever.
I guess we'll see if he turns out to be one of those people.

(35,306 posts)law enforcement definition.
Domestic terrorism must be directed at the (federal) government, not at individuals.
We can all have our own private or in-group definitions, but that's their group and that's what they're obligated to use.
I'd also note that the fact they didn't splash the name and picture everywhere asap indicated, clearly, that he was white. The description was white. But at the same time, what you find in the media is they're so concerned about people jumping to conclusions about Muslim terrorists that more often than not when the name's withheld it means "Muslim." Whatever the race. (Conversely, in those cases where the name/religion is put out at once the MSM backpedal and say, "Just because he's Muslim doesn't mean it's terrorism."

(3,746 posts)A U.S. official says the gunman in the shootings in Tennessee has been identified as 24-year-old Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez.
He was believed to have been born in Kuwait, and it was unclear whether he was a U.S. or Kuwaiti citizen. The official was speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing, sensitive investigation. It was not immediately clear whether the gunman's first name was spelled Muhammad or Mohammad.
He is from Hixson, Tennessee, which is just a few miles across the river from Chattanooga.
Authorities and officials say the gunman killed four Marines and wounded a police officer and others in two attacks on military facilities. The gunman was also dead.
