Tom Cotton Comes Out Swinging Against Iran Deal: 'Congress Will Kill' This
Source: TPM
The freshman senator who made waves earlier this year when he sent an open letter to Iran's leaders said Tuesday that a landmark nuclear deal struck with that country was "dangerous" and will be nullified by Congress.
"This proposed deal is a terrible, dangerous mistake that's going to pave the path for Iran to get a nuclear weapon while also giving them tens of billions of dollars of sanctions relief, even lifting the arms embargo at a time when they're destabilizing the entire middle east," Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AK) said in an appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe." "The American people will repudiate this deal and I believe Congress will kill the deal."
Cotton, an Iraq War veteran and the youngest member of the Senate, has been the most vocal opponent of a nuclear deal with Iran. He sent an open letter to Iran's leaders in early March that warned Congress did not intend to honor any potential deal. Forty-seven of Cotton's fellow Republican senators signed the open letter.
The Arkansas Republican particularly took issue with the fact that the deal allows "where necessary, when necessary" inspections of Iran's nuclear sites rather than "anytime, anywhere" access to those sites.

(23,301 posts)Bet they had the talking points ready to be emailed before this was announced. They may have the votes to "kill" it initially, but sure don't have the votes to over-ride the veto. Hope enough Dems have the courage to support him so they even win the first vote. Hope enough will be disgusted by the vitriolic display and blatant effort to interfere in anohter country's interal decisions from little murderer that they turn against his proposal to kill the agreement.

(14,204 posts)But I think Blitzer was a pioneer in using the phrase "some would say..." in order to introduce a point of view, but in the form of a statement that "some" want aired to pretend its a valid point of view shared by many. When in fact its simply a wedge or tangent devised by the RW meant to deflect the message of the guest.

Apparently the unanimous opinions of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council are bullshit compared to the personal opinions of Republicans in America.
The Republicans are a party that have abandoned all pretence of compassion and Grace, and embraced Bullshit as their official policy, that is the short explanation.
You know, like Jesus.

(8,203 posts)giving them tens of billions of dollars of sanctions relief - cottonmouth surely knows - surely he does, right?
Congressionally-mandated sanctions on Iran is linked to issues outside the nuclear program, a full removal seems unlikely given the current political climate on Capitol Hill, though dynamics could change if it appeared a deal were within reach that satisfied US goals.
At the same time, the use of waivers is preferential for the United States, at least in the short term, to hedge against evidence of Iranian non-compliance. They are also not subject to any Congressional approval, leaving US negotiators the freedom to sanctions offer relief as they deem necessary.

Second, and most important they do not have the votes to override a veto
Third, the U.S. Isn't the only country involved
