Senate Hands a Victory to Obama on Trade Pact

Source: The New York Times

WASHINGTON — The Senate on Tuesday narrowly voted to end debate on legislation granting President Obama enhanced negotiating powers to complete a major Pacific trade accord, virtually ensuring final passage on Wednesday of Mr. Obama’s top legislative priority in his final years in office.

The procedural decision barely cleared the 60 votes needed — the tally was 60 to 37 — but final passage will need only 51 votes. It was the second time the Senate blocked a filibuster of the so-called trade promotion authority, but this time the bill was shorn of a measure to offer enhanced retraining and education assistance to workers displaced by international trade accords. That measure faces a crucial procedural vote on Wednesday as well.

Passage of a stand-alone trade promotion bill will put pressure on House Democrats. Earlier this month, they brought down the worker aid provision when it was legislatively linked to the trade-negotiating legislation, believing that the maneuver would torpedo the entire trade package.

But Republican leaders — with the White House’s support — found a parliamentary way to corner the Democrats by separating the two pieces of the bill. By Wednesday evening, legislation will most likely be on the president’s desk giving him the power to complete the trade accord, the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership, knowing Congress could not amend or filibuster the final agreement. He can sign it whether or not the House passes worker dislocation assistance, which is scheduled to come to a vote on Friday.

You know they'll come after someone like Bernie Sanders full bore with their money if he gets the nomination. So such a commitment would have to both rig the primary and the general election. Not saying it's not possible, but if it isn't, then passing this bill is dangerous. If it is possible then the rigging is equally as dangerous. Not much to cheer about!

Unions did not support the TPP trade deal; in fact they reminded him of their support in 2008 and 2012.
Obama then criticized Unions for threatening with primary challengers if they voted for this bill.

This is on record of AFL-CIO member unions statements

I think Unions will soon begin to endorse Bernie Sanders.

AFL-CIO said they plan to wait. In other words Hillary is not the anointed one.

In fact it was a low grade issue. Hillary actually supported it then

But yes Unions were in strong support of Obama 2008/2012. Obama talked a good fight for the middle class and working class but was in bed with the corporate mafia and Wall St even then.

I voted for him twice but didn't realize then that he was such a right wing Republican. I did have suspicions but what other choices did we have.

Take a look at his contributors in 2012.
I'm assuming that he got a big boost form the Koch Bro's and other Wall St puppets for his library for getting this deal done.

Bill Nelson steps up fundraising for 2018 re-election

Sen. Bill Nelson, Florida’s only statewide elected Democrat, is beginning to ramp up fundraising as he prepares to seek a fourth term in 2018.

People close to Nelson, who considered running for governor last year, say the 72-year-old is intent on running again. He is currently ranking member on the Commerce Committee and would take the chair if Democrats can recapture the Senate, which is at least possible.

of and had the trade deals explained to them prior to a vote-------------now its done after the fact, let's have a National Holiday, any suggestions on what to call it?

From the list being generated on this thread there are only from the looks of it, three possibly four up for re-election in this 2016 cycle.

So the gambit was to vote for this Richard Nixon authority (because in the 1970's he said that he had the authority under the Constitution gave him the "right" to fast track his trade policy with China , with no public input or legislature input----------------this from the same crook that damn near brought down the government and the Constitution, and this is what started this current dismantling of the Constitution on trade deals with the public.

So basically this country and this legislature session and all the past ones have operated a program that was created by a crook and presidential criminal that violated the Constitution--because the Executive branch grabbing power from the Legislative branch.

From all appearances the only companies with employees will be the high paid athletes---------there job description can't really be outsourced

http://www.citizen.org/fast-track

http://www.citizen.org/trade/fasttrack/

Now this is another reason why Sanders needs to be voted into the presidential office--so that he can try to do something to correct this mess

That’s because the U.S. Constitution sets the qualifications and terms for being a member of the House or Senate; changing those qualifications or terms (as in making them subject to a recall) is unconstitutional and would require a constitutional amendment.

What really pisses me off about this TPP issue is for the first time in history a Democrat (at least that is his label) ..A Democratic President bashed unions Criticized them for taking a stand against this measure. Unions threatened to support any challengers in upcoming primaries against those Democrats that voted for this TPP authorization.

* Note: It was union support that got him elected as President

Obama is obliviously very happy with this Republican Majority. So much so that he might just campaign for them in 2016 to keep it that way.
