Pa. Senate Tries to Stop Philly Sick Leave Law
Source: Philadelphia Magazine
The Pennsylvania Senate has passed a bill to pre-empt and undo Phillys new law requiring most employers provide paid sick leave to their employees.
The bill goes to the Republican-controlled House, where a GOP spokesman said many members support it. But it is opposed by Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf.
"Governor Wolf supports paid sick leave for workers, and local municipalities' ability to pass ordinances for leave that they believe will help families and the economy," spokesman Jeff Sheridan said in a statement.
The bill's chief sponsor, Sen. John Eichelberger, R-Blair, said sick leave policies should not be dictated by municipalities, and such requirements hurt the smallest businesses that have tight margins and the flexibility to allow people to change shifts to accommodate their needs.

(95,337 posts)Why do we even bother allowing cities to elect City Councils? The people of Philadelphia did not elect John Eichelberger of Blair county. They probably don't even know where Blair County is and if they wanted to go there it would be at least a four hour drive.
So how does a guy who lives four hours from the city of Philadelphia know what's best for the city. How much revenue does Blair country bring into the state of Pennsylvania? Does Blair County host 4 National Sports Teams? Does Blair County receive millions of visitors each year to visit the birthplace of our nation including historic sites such as Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell? Will Blair County be bringing in over 2 million visitors this year year when the Pope makes his historic visit to the United States for a week? Will Blair County bring in Millions of visitors when they host the Democratic Convention in 2016 (like they did when they hosted the GOP Convention in 2000).
This is a serious problem. When Mike Pence signed that law in Indiana he did so knowing that the Mayor of Indianapolis, a republican, asked him to veto it. These state law makers and GOP governors bend over backwards to please the rural and suburban folks yet shit upon their biggest money makers in the state - their urban centers. Mike Pence gave bigoted country folks the right not to bake cakes for Gay Weddings while costing their largest city, Indianapolis, millions in lost job expansion and convention plus putting at risk one of the best deals they have with the NCAA Basketball Tournaments.
So I question why laws passed by the city council elected by the citizens of Philadelphia be overturned by government officials not elected by the city? I just hope that the Democrat elected by the state of Pennsylvania will prevent this from happening.

(4,482 posts)I called the Governor's Office of Public Liaison (717) 787-5825 yesterday to urge him to veto the bill.
I hope any other PA residents reading this will do the same.

(129,339 posts)and that was only after the City Council was able to craft a veto-proof version that they could override if he vetoed it for a 3rd time. The final compromise version calls for 1 hour of sick leave for every 40 hours of work and it would apply to businesses with 10 or more employees (I think the earlier bills called for it to apply to businesses with 5 or more).

Assuming Wolf vetoes whatever may hit his desk, I doubt they have enough to override.
