'Huge gaps' in Clinton email record, Benghazi probe chief says
Source: Reuters
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Huge gaps exist in the emails former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has provided to a congressional committee investigating the 2012 attack on a U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, the panel's chairman said on Sunday.
Republican Representative Trey Gowdy said his committee lacked documentation from Clinton's trip to Libya after the attack despite a popular photo image of her using a handheld device during a flight to that country.
"We have no emails from that day. In fact we have no emails from that trip," said Gowdy, who heads the committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. "There are huge gaps."
Widely considered the frontrunner for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination, Clinton used a private email account for all official business as President Barack Obama's secretary of state from 2009 to 2013.

Until the name callers have the ethical fortitude to acknowledge that her email shenanigans were at the very least ill-considered, I cannot treat anyone in this peanut gallery with any regard.

"Ethical fortitude," that cracks me up. You have no clue what the facts are and whether or not the process was "ill considered." But, seriously, don't let anything stand in the way of a negative Hillary story.
It does not matter whether the attacks are true to republican voters. They are awash in ignorance and will believe anything that justifies their stances. I just thought we had a higher standard on DU.

(9,073 posts)First, secret material was never sent by email. If Hillary was sending it by email, then it was not secret.
Otherwise, it could have been text messages, wedding cake recipes, or whatever.
The entire reason for controlling your own email is to keep the GOP from making a big deal out of every word. Hillary, Jeb, and lots of others were doing the same thing. It was smart and it seems to have worked.
The Senate has been given all the relevant email (months ago). No matter what, the GOP are going to continue to bring up the Benghazi stuff because they love CIs and it gets them all rabid.

And that is on top of the over 1 million email's the Bush Whitehouse deleted from the RNC email server they all used. If there is a scandal it is all of the email deleted by Bush administration officials. Gowdy looks to be barking up the wrong tree.

Look at the date of the photo:
That image was taken on on Oct. 18, 2011 by Diana Walker on assignment for TIME when Clinton was on her way to meet with new Libyan Leaders in Tripoli to pledges U.S. help to a 'Free Libya'.

Sancho
(9,073 posts)if you send an email from your account (hillary.com or whatever) to ANY .gov account then the .gov server captures it. All her work related emails went to or from other staff and officials who were on a .gov server. Only ONE side needs to be captured to meet the letter of the law. In fact, the State had all her emails over the entire four years if they collected them from all the others who she exchanged email with...except her daughter and personal emails.
Sooo....unless you are doing government business by emailing yourself (from hillary.com to hillary.com), then all .gov email was captured on both her server AND whatever .gov server sent/received it. She provided her server side in case the government lost any of their side.
Finally, she had her staff and counsel go through all personal emails and send copies of anything that might be "government business" to the State department.
As she said, there was NO secret material on any email. Also, the server was set up for President Clinton when he was President, and it had the best security. No personal nor government email from that server has ever been made public by a hacker.
Also, she asked all the work related emails to be released to the public. The public does not get to see Hillary's yoga class schedule, cookie recipe, or hairdresser colors.
Just like ALL employees, you choose who you email privately. You don't have to give most private emails to anyone without cause.
marshall
(6,665 posts)Other people could have been just as concerned with protecting their own privacy--Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton can't be the only two politicians to use a private email address.
Sancho
(9,073 posts)Even if Hillary had a government only email, she could have used a private email (legally) to do government business AS LONG AS SHE SAVED A COPY. That was the law at the time. In this case, she purposefully sent email to .gov accounts as a way to make sure that government emails were captured.
Lots of government officials (including other Secretaries of State) used private email accounts. Colin Powell's emails (unlike Hillary's) are missing! Hillary is the only person that we know of who has agreed to release them all to the public.
Jeb Bush and Scott Walker had their own servers. There probably were lots of other private servers that we never heard about.
You said, "All her work related emails went to or from other staff and officials who were on a .gov server...."
How do you know this? Because Hillary is telling the truth about it? Should we take it on faith that she never exchanged emails about contributions for the Clinton Foundation with some Abu Dhabi sheik who needed a US Government favor?
We will never know whether she did anything like this because she has, at her own discretion, destroyed all the emails that might reveal the truth.
Sancho
(9,073 posts)They have been clear for over a year with the Benghazi investigation that State Department staff were involved in every aspect of international deals, and they vetted many of the transactions to make sure they didn't violate any rules. The Secretary of State is in charge. If you don't trust her, then elect a repub and you'll get another Condi and another war!
You must think Hillary is an idiot. If anyone was making deals and getting kickbacks it was Bush, Cheney, and Halliburton. Hillary has asked that ALL her work emails be released. Where are Colin Powell's (missing), Hagal's (missing), Condi's (said she didn't send any; haha!)...etc., etc. Do you really believe that Condi never send a private email to Rove's private server that we know existed?? Have you seen any hacked email (Snowden?) or other communication that Hillary did something wrong? NO! Why, because nothing is there...if you are a Hillary hater, fine, but don't fall for the Fox BS!
Actually, staff reported the entire server was backed up twice (once by Google in 2011 I think, and once by McAffee in 2014) as she left office. It was her choice to have professional counsel go through and delete personal emails. I suspect that was because her medical information, Bill Clinton's medical stuff, etc. were on that server that was set up for him, and they didn't want to give the GOP any more crap to carry on about. Remember that the CIA was spying on Senate staff. Hillary was smart to stay off of government accounts where half the employees are repub assholes.
If she had any "deals" then she could just as easily have texted or even verbally told someone - so why put something illegal on email?!!? That's pretty crazy with staff running around. It's just a right wing conspiracy theory with no foundation or evidence or reality.
candelista
(1,986 posts)Of course her staff is going to defend her.
But your loyalty is touching.
Sancho
(9,073 posts)Hillary is entirely correct (at her press meeting). All government employees are responsible for determining what is personal and what is private anyway. Everyone can be trained in what is secret, and staff can keep tabs on things, but in the long run everyone makes the choice about their own phone calls, emails, text messages, etc.
Even if you have a government phone, there's no one to prevent you from picking up the private phone and calling Putin! If he takes the call, then you are doing business on your private phone. There's no reason you can't send a personal email on your government computer. You may know that the email is now in the FOIA domain, but maybe you send a personal one anyway.
Unless you are weird and "never sent an email" or "never texted" in your life, then you had to chose in every case what is work and what is personal. If I meet someone through work, but want to invite them to my daughter's wedding, then business crosses into personal. That's why Hillary had counsel go through and make choices just to be sure that no work stuff morphed into personal or vice versa.
I'm not advocating for Hillary nor going on a wild witch hunt. It is simply correct that the public can NEVER know everything in every politician's life unless we change the rules so that work vs. personal is NOT self-selected! In that case, the official can be watched by cameras, followed by drones, and every word is recorded and posted in public. Is that what you advocate? If not, there is NO WAY for anyone EXCEPT STAFF or the person themself to be the gatekeeper.
Logically, Hillary did what all government employees do at some level.
Sancho
(9,073 posts)the only way you could have proof that Hillary or any other official was telling the truth would be to have all their private and work related:
email
text messages
audio recordings (remember the Nixon Watergate tapes)
videos
photographs
travel logs
visitor logs
staff records
phone records
phone recordings
bank records
etc., etc..
