Monroe Energy refinery workers may strike for safety

Source: Delco Times

By Kathleen Carey

With United Steelworkers Union Local 10-234’s contract with Monroe Energy LLC having expired at midnight Saturday and talks between the national USW and industry representative Shell Oil Co. broken down, the Trainer workers are preparing to join their colleagues at 15 other refineries across the nation by going out on strike.

Refinery workers’ contracts are negotiated on two levels — nationally and locally. Nationally, USW representatives meet with an appointed petroleum-producing industry representative, in this case Shell, to craft an agreement on issues like wages and terms of the agreement that are then used as a blueprint for all local contracts.

In addition, local union representatives meet with plant officials to discuss issues specific to their situation such as operational procedures.

Talks between Shell and the USW nationally concluded Feb. 20 over what union officials are saying are serious safety issues and what industry representatives are identifying as the union’s demand to replace maintenance contractors with union employees.
