(7,658 posts)"National treasure " is sometimes a terribly overused term, but in the case of Levon Helm, I think it's appropriate. Prayers for a safe and peaceful passage to him.

(7,658 posts)Always seemed like he must've been a nice guy. Glad to hear it confirmed. BTW, I read his autobiography, This Wheel's On Fire a couple of years ago. An amazing life, and the wonderful music he made has enriched all of our lives. Forever...

(1,811 posts)In my view, Levon is as close to a musical saint as this country has produced. He has a pure and abiding love for his craft that is contagious, and his legacy is enormous. For Levon, music is everything and the only thing.
Safe travels, Mr. Helm. You are greatly loved.

I just need some place where I can lay my head
"Hey, Mister, can you tell me, where a man might find a bed?"
He just grinned and shook my hand, "No" was all he said

(10,419 posts)One of my all-time favorite movies is The Right Stuff, and an iconic line is from Chuck Yeager (Sam Shepard) "Hey Ridley - you got any Beeman's?" And Ridley (Levon Helm) responds "Yeah, I might have me a stick."
I saw the film when it opened back in 83 (had to go back a second night because it was sold out). Brilliant, and launched the careers of many actors.
