We are now accepting new volunteers to serve on the MIR Team from July-October 2012

This discussion thread was locked by Skinner (a host of the Announcements group).

Volunteers who wish to help keep DU running smoothly should consider joining the Malicious Intruder Removal Team (MIR Team). The role of MIR Team members is simple: they are empowered to revoke the posting privileges of people who show up at DU with the intent to disrupt.

Members of the MIR Team are provided with tools to delete spam posted by people who have had their posting privileges revoked, but they are NOT responsible for removing community standards violations, locking threads, or dealing with violations of DU's Terms of Service wherever they may occur.

If you are a DU member with at least six months of membership, at least 1,000 posts, and proof of identity (ie. you are a Star member or current DU2 donor and made the donation in your own name) then you can apply to be a member of the MIR Team.

How do I apply?

Simple: just post in this thread to let us know that you'd like to give it a try, and you could be selected by the Admins. There is no application form to fill out, and no confidentiality agreement to sign. MIR Team members do not have access to any privileged information about other DU members.

We plan to introduce the new MIR Team on Tuesday July 3.

For much more information about the MIR Team, click here!

Edited to add: due to power outages in the Washington DC area, the MIR switchover will be postponed for a few days. We will do the switchover on Thursday or Friday this week. Thanks for your patience.

I am retiring and looking forward to a break, but it has been great being on MIRT. Learning how to work with others, how to get past our individual biases and listen rather than run roughshod over each other like is typical out in the forums. (I am not saying everyone does that, speaking about myself and what I've seen in becoming a team).

Learning about repeaters, spammers, all sorts of interesting things, and how to deal with people who come here to disrupt and not to disrupt. Learning about my own habits and patterns. Seeing how the MIRT part of the moderation IS done from the inside. Learning about forums that I never went to before. Learning more about other DUers.

And by working together, making friends of posters I didn't think possible.

Give it a try.

if you want to be a good MIRT member, there is more than just sitting back and piping up when your favorite issue is discussed, or when the worst trolls are discussed.
There is a lot of "scrub" work too. You wouldn't believe the number of spammers we have.
Then there are the one post trolls and we have a handful of repeaters who sign up over and over.

I'm retiring after two terms because that is how it is set up, so I ask all new volunteers to take it seriously and be prepared to actually work at it. Lazy bones need not apply. It's not fair to your other team members.

The amount of spammers were pretty eye opening, and also the onslaught of newbie "members" every time there was a big news item. It is a busy but very rewarding job, and very interesting to see how other members look at things. It will hopefully change your perspective a bit, as it did mine.

the dust every day (on the evening of June 5th, there was a one-hour period where every newbie who signed up and starting posting right away got PPR'ed) and how many of the MIs we get are the same people signing up over and over and over. It makes me wonder if their online-dating profiles list "trolling" as their hobby.

a big news story (like Zimmerman or the Wisconsin recall) would hit and we'd get massive sign-ons with talking points. No way to know if they were concerted propaganda writers or folks watching Fox news (or other channels even) and signed up to voice opinions on the big news (or a mix of both). If they are hostile from the get-go they are easy to PPR, but some seemed to be honest posters so we'd have to wade through them all, watch a few posts etc ... It truly is very interesting and makes you look at internet comments in a new way no matter which site you're reading/posting on.

I'd encourage anyone to try it for 3 months and see what you think.
