The story of when the Nazi's took over Austria and conscripted people to serve in the army, etc is hitting just too close to home.

(889 posts)The various treaties imposed by the Allies after WW I deprived Austria (and Hungary) of access to the sea. Before 1914 Austro-Hungary had ports, and a credible navy. After 1918, no ports and no navy. That's still a sore spot with older Austrians and Hungarians of my acquaintance.

(62,444 posts)Suffice it to say, the privileges appurtenent to being an Austrian naval officer well after the time that Austria's "navy" consisted of a few patrol boats on the Danube, didn't sit well with Austrians circa 1938 either. It had been a good 20 years since 1918 at that point.
What, in the context of the movie (which is less than faithful to the facts), was Von Trapp's "job"?

(889 posts)Trapp moved up in naval rank back when Austria had a real navy. He was mustered out after 1918. So in real life he wasn't "retired". Better to say he was laid off.
