Haley: 'Open question' if US athletes will attend Olympics amid North Korea tensions

By Brett Samuels - 12/06/17 10:02 PM EST 105comments

United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley said Wednesday there’s still an “open question” as to whether the U.S. will send its athletes to South Korea in February for the Winter Olympics, citing escalating tensions with North Korea.

The 2018 Winter Olympics start Feb. 9, 2018, and are being held in PyeongChang, South Korea, which is roughly 50 miles from the demilitarized zone.

Haley said U.S. officials will monitor activity in the region closely, and determine a way to ensure athletes are protected. "What we will do is we’ll make sure that we’re taking every precaution possible to make sure that they’re safe, and to know everything that’s going on around them,” she said.

Asked if that meant there’s still uncertainty over whether U.S. athletes will participate, Haley said it’s “an open question.” “I have not heard anything about that, but I do know in the talks we have whether it’s about Jerusalem or North Korea, it’s about how do we protect the U.S. citizens in the area. So those are conversations that are happening daily,” she said.

It's as though Putin called his puppet and said that USA can't go to the Olympics because Russia can't go.

The timing is VERY suspicious! If there are such security concerns about South Korea why are there no restrictions on Americans traveling there in general?
