That is, are all these great new incentives for the rich supposed to apply to decisions theyve already made?

(52,489 posts)they certainly can't criminalize something that was legal at the time, that's clearly unconstitutional ex post facto legislation.
however, tax changes can apply to the current year. for example, shrub's 2001 tax cut was passed in june 2001 but applied to the entire year, even though it was half over.
in fact it even included a "rebate" of 2000 taxes.
i'm guessing that only cuts can apply retroactively, not increases, but not sure about that, especially not with this lot in charge....

(1,823 posts)the IRS 2017 tax code is likely all but finished. I dont know if there is certain dates when that has to be finalized, but i would imagine this is for the 2018 tax year.
