(1,097 posts)They blew a gasket last year when Obama claimed the lands as national monuments without asking Utah what they wanted. Instead, if I recall correctly, he meet with local Indians and proceeded to preserve these lands as national monuments knowing that it would block Trump/Republicans from destroying the land for oil drilling, etc.

(1,097 posts)Thanks, will research for updated info. Yes, residents were "all in" but the opposition wasn't from residents but rather from Utah politicians and their stated anger was due to Obama doing it without a vote or considering input from Utah politicians. Maybe things/positions have changed -- off to look for current info.

(34,661 posts)The issue is Race Based and that is what it is. Every County Commissar in the State is all in with wiping out the two Monuments.
The Residents know better, but they keep voting for these Knuckle Dragger's because they have a R after their names on the Ballots.
Here is what most people miss, the Republican Party of Utah wants to return their State to what it looked like in 1970. Well guess what, you want to see what that looks like,go to the city of Tremonton,Utah. Hee-Haw!!!

Bishop and Trump also complained that Obama and Clinton had abused presidential power by creating monuments without adequately involving the public, although the Antiquities Act does not require public involvement. Obama created Bears Ears after five years of public meetings, which also involved negotiations between five tribes that first proposed the monument to protect the Wests largest collection of tribal artifacts, as well as Utah lawmakers who also sought to protect Bears Ears, but on a smaller scale.
When Clinton created Grand Staircase, he kept the Utah congressional delegation in the dark until it was too late. They learned the news at the same time as the public, infuriating them. Creating the Grand Staircase put a lucrative seam of coal deep inside the monument out of reach of miners. But its not as if the monument size and boundaries havent been examined before now. The Utah Association of Counties sought unsuccessfully to overturn the monument in court. Congress has also already readjusted the monuments boundaries with legislation that involved a substantial land exchange and federal payment to the State of Utah.

(51,129 posts)SUWA Statement on Reports President Trump Will Eliminate 85% of Bears Ears and Half of Grand Staircase-Escalante
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Steve Bloch, 801-428-3981
In response to reports in the Washington Post today that President Trump intends to eliminate 85% of Bears Ears National Monument and half of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance Executive Director Scott Groene issued the following statement:
If President Trump chooses to act on the disgraceful work that is leaking out of the Department of Interior by shrinking Bears Ears and Grand Staircase Escalante National Monuments, it will not withstand its coming test in courts any more than it will withstand the judgement of history.
The new boundaries reflected in the leaked reports are a decimation of two iconic landscapes and an insult to the tribes that advocated to protect Bears Ears. To slash these monuments at the behest of ideological extremists and dirty energy barons without regard to the consequences to the landscape or to the overwhelming consensus of millions of Americans who have voiced strong opposition to any changes to our national monuments would be the single most harmful attack any president has launched on public lands.
