The Jeff Sessions Delimma

Speculation here:

Watching Rachel Maddow Friday evening talk about Trump’s recurring attacks on Jeff Sessions made me wonder why Sessions remains so passive and submissive in the face of Trump’s withering assaults. After all, the office of the Attorney General is a top cabinet level position, and the prestige of the office commands independence and respect. Why doesn’t he hold a press conference and push back or resign? The answer, I suspect, is that Sessions knows that he is vulnerable to prosecution, and he has two options. One: cling to Trump in the fading hope of a pardon (an increasingly unlikely possibility as Trump obviously feels betrayed by Sessions), or two: turn state’s witness, and cooperate in exchange for leniency. It seems to me that Sessions remains AG because either Trump or Bob Mueller wants him there. Or both. If Trump fires Sessions he knows that Sessions best bet would be to cooperate with Mueller. But how does Trump know that Sessions isn’t already cooperating? If I were in Sessions’ position I’d be playing both sides until I were forced to openly choose, at which point I’d go with Mueller. This makes me suspect that Sessions is already cooperating, and stuck in a very uncomfortable stress position. Sucks to be him.

He has the job he always wanted. Why would he care what Twitler says? He knows he won't fire him.
