(CNN)Eleven princes were detained in Saudi Arabia on Saturday following the formation of an anti-corruption committee by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, Saudi-backed broadcaster Al-Arabiya reported.
Three ministers were removed from their positions: Economy and Planning Minister Adel bin Mohammed Faqih, National Guard Minister Prince Miteb bin Abdullah bin Abdulaziz and Naval Forces Commander Admiral Abdullah bin Sultan bin Mohammed Al-Sultan, said Saudi TV, the government's official broadcaster.
King Salman ordered the new anti-corruption campaign as part of an "active reform agenda aimed at tackling a persistent problem that has hindered development efforts in the Kingdom in recent decades," a press release from the Saudi Ministry of Communications said.
The royal decree said the committee was needed "due to the propensity of some people for abuse, putting their personal interest above public interest, and stealing public funds" and will "trace and combat corruption at all levels," according to the release.

(19,199 posts)the money those guys get for doing absolutely nothing is amazing, and just because they were born into the correct family. They don't really get a salary, they get monthly stipends. However, there are a myriad of "slush funds" funds available to pilfer at their leisure, and they get extra for getting married, having children, building a new palace, etc. etc.
If they're "stealing public funds" (aren't all the funds public funds?) they're getting very greedy.
Sounds like the Royal House of Saud is starting to pinch pennies? If I were Trump (and I'm SO happy I'm not) I wouldn't count on them purchasing those $300 billion worth of arms very soon (perhaps not at all) and Jared can forget about getting a "loan" to bail his ass out of that albatross on 5th Avenue that he bought. Jared and Ivanka might have to sell some of their precious art collection to keep the wolf (and Deutsche Bank AG) away from their door. I wonder if there are payments due to the Russians as well?
One thing is for sure, he can't try to wheedle a loan out of Russia now. I just love it when rich people are threatened with having no money! It makes my heart sing, especially when the rich people in question are this filthy bunch of grifters.

(118,636 posts)welcome the royal house of saud getting real and having to look at consequences of their wahabiism being spread around the world. There is some wealth that becomes an illness. Then it graduates to a disease. The treatment is prompt interconnectedness with all kinds of types of people. It is not a painful treatment. Pretty heartwarming.

A new Saudi anti-corruption body has detained 11 princes, four sitting ministers and dozens of former ministers, media reports say.
The detentions came hours after the new committee, headed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was formed by royal decree. Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, a billionaire with investments in Twitter and Apple, is among those held. King Salman also replaced the heads of the national guard and the navy.
(snip)
It is not clear on what grounds the detentions were made but Saudi broadcaster Al-Arabiya said fresh investigations had been launched into the 2009 Jeddah floods and the outbreak of the Mers virus which emerged in Saudi Arabia in 2012.

Other than that of Prince Alwaleed, the names of the detainees could not be confirmed immediately. Shares in Kingdom Holding, the investment firm owned by the prince, plunged 9.9% in early trade on the Saudi stock market. Kingdom Holding is one of the country's most important investors. Apart from Twitter and Apple, it has shares in Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, Citigroup bank, the Four Seasons hotel chain and ride-sharing service Lyft.

(13,462 posts)I look forward to more discovery of what this really means. It seems complicated. It might be a good sign for the Saudis, or something else.

(2 posts)We might be concerned Trump wants to escalate conflict with Iran.
On the positive side, we might see Saudi Arabia stopping the war in Yemen and getting a rein on various sheiks funding factions all over the Middle East.

(2 posts)Talal (the richest man in Saudi Arabia) was a frequent critic of Donald Trump.
The arrest would be a good sign for Trump's ability to do business in Saudi Arabia. I wonder how much wealth and influence Putin will permit Trump to accumulate.
