..that occurred before Manaport's time with Trump from what I can tell.

They are not treason and because it says "against the US" just means he was trying to defraud the US.

A friend of mine once got a ticket on what was once a highway on federal land and the summons said "The US Federal Government against ......" (it was the Dulles Toll Road years ago when the Feds administered it).

I haven't read everything in detail, but these charges don't seem to have anything to do with 2016 election. It's useful because Mueller now has leverage to try to get Manaport and his buddy to flip on something 2016 election related.

like lying to the FBI or DOJ to hide your actions, thereby obstructing justice...also, if you hide money(as in laundering) - you are defrauding the government.

This is a broad charge.

They can pretty much grab up a lot of people under the heading of conspiracy against the US.
