The Secretary of State allegedly called the president a "fucking moron."

Rex Tillerson, a retired oil company executive and alleged "Secretary of State," apparently needed only a few months to decide that agreeing to serve as chief diplomat to a president with no interest in diplomacy was what they call a "career misstep." According to NBC News, Tillerson called the president a "moron" and threatened to quit after this summer's insane Boy Scouts Jamboree speech, returning to Washington only after being talked down by Vice President Pence and other "top administration officials." Axios helpfully reports that the epithet was, in fact, "fucking moron," because if you're going to publicly disparage your superior's intelligence and fitness for the job he holds, you might as well get in a profane adjective while you're at it.

At a hastily-assembled press conference on Wednesday, a somber Tillerson repudiated the story in a speech written for an audience of one, indignantly asserting that his commitment to the president's success remains "as strong as it was on the day I accepted his offer to serve as Secretary of State." Given that Tillerson has ruefully admitted that before Trump ambushed him with a Cabinet position offer, he had intended to retire from ExxonMobil in order to spend more time with his grandchildren, it's not clear how strong that commitment ever was in the first place, but still.

Just in case there were any remaining rough patches that required smoothing over, Tillerson spent a few extra minutes heaping praise on his petulant benefactor. "He’s smart, he demands results wherever he goes, and he holds those around him accountable for whether they’ve done the job he’s asked them to do," declared the Secretary of State whose recent attempts to engage in delicate-but-promising diplomatic negotiations with North Korea were immediately undermined by his boss on Twitter. When asked to address the most salacious lines from NBC's report, though—whether he, as alleged, had called Trump a "moron" in a meeting with national security staffers—Tillerson demurred.
