Chris Murphy's profile rises with gun tragedies

BY AMIE PARNES AND JORDAIN CARNEY - 10/05/17 06:00 AM EDT

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) is carving out a national profile with his advocacy for tougher gun control laws.

During the last several years, following the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., Murphy has slowly become more of a household name — in part because of his visibility on issues surrounding gun violence.

Mass shootings have become a regular presence in American life, and with each one, Murphy has been at the center pleading for his colleagues to take steps he argues would lower the likelihood of carnage.

Earlier this week, after a lone gunman killed 59 people and left more than 500 injured at a Las Vegas concert, Murphy urged Congress “to get off its ass.” The 44-year-old senator has pledged to introduce an updated version of a bill calling for background checks to stop a person with a criminal past or a history of mental illness from buying a gun.

When they had the presidency, house and senate. Perhaps we can get it through now, but even if it passed Congress I wonder if Trump would sign it.

With noting that Dems, when they had a great chance to do so, should have passed gun control that was overwhelmingly popular? Do you disagree? And exactly where in my post do I assign blame to anyone? The legislation needed 60 votes and did't get it, so of course it isn't the "democrats or OBAMA's fault" that we don't have UBCs, and I didn't say it was. You are reading way too much into a comment. Christ.

Where does my post lay blame on anyone? Which part of it do you disagree with? You attack my post but can't explain why?

I am surprised given the history of introduced Gun control legislation, you thought Democrats could have passed meaningful legislation during the short years of being in “control”

People forget that Al Franken's seat was held up by a very long recount. Then, soon after he was seated, Ted Kennedy died.

I was looking up introduced gun control legislation—I see this “when Dems were in control” meme fairly often, I always wonder “when was that?”

They were trying to prevent a 2nd Depression, save the auto industry and get health insurance for tens of millions.

I'm very proud of what President Obama and Dems did during that time.

Instead they get rewarded for it, and they're going to do it again.
