the fact is they didn't vet Sarah Palin either. And they paid dearly for it.

Even now, there is little enthusiasm for Romney's efforts. It was just McCain grasping at straws. After 8 years of Bush, just about any Democrat could have won in 08. And McCain was up against the most powerful speaker and charismatic politician we have seen. Bill, for all his genius, can't make a speech that tops Obama's articulate and uplifting messages.

First, we know what a McCain VP looks like, no vetting is obvious.
I think all McCain was doing was the what votes does this person bring to the table.
Romney - Mormon white and rich, I got a lot of those plus I don't know if the fundamentalist Christians will go with a Mormon.
Palin - Fundamentalist white WOMEN, ding ding ding we have a winner!

And Carville knows it. Once the meme is out there, it becomes real and for Romney to counter it, he has to fight with a ghost.

It's like the David Vitter thing. No one really accused Vitter of paying prostitutes to put diapers on him. But Carville just tossed that out one day -- more as a throwaway line than an accusation "...having the prostitutes put diapers on him or whatever he was doing" or words to that effect.

Once those words were out, they became real to a lot of people and there is no effective way to counter that without making things worse.

Because of that kick-ass wink of hers.

Obviously there wasn't any interviews to evaluate before she talked to Katie Couric.
