I grew up in the western KY coal fields. Guys quit high school at 16, farted around for a couple of years, then went to work for Peabody Coal when they turned 18. An education meant jack shit to them, and they taught their kids to have the same attitude. I, and my 6 siblings, were fortunate. My dad worked for Peabody (surface, not underground - he ran that giant shovel), and he and mom never wanted any of us to work mining coal, and none of us dropped out of high school. We were the exception for the small town that I grew up in.

My Dad and his 11 brothers and sisters, joined the military, went to college and helped each other to stay out of the mines. One of my uncles ended up back in the mines like my grandfather, but none of the 42 grandchildren ever went into a mine---except for that cool mine museum in Beckley.

Is why only people with coal jobs are worthy of getting special attention from republicans. "By god, we need to protect coal jobs! People are hurting!" When it comes to just about everyone else, it's pull yourself up by your bootstraps, take some classes/go back to school, etc. Not coal miners, and their jobs are never coming back and will continue to dwindle due to automation getting coal off the surface of mountains instead of underground. So why continue to blow smoke up their collective ass when there are fewer and fewer of them, and it's hardly likely they're going to vote democrat anyway?

When it comes to the environment, the GOP is made up of two groups (which overlap). One are the ones who want to pollute as much as possible because they know it makes democrats upset, and the other are the religiously-insane who think Jesus is coming back so it doesn't matter what we do to the Earth.

they don't give a crap about workers, coal miners or otherwise. they want to give money to businesses and their owners, including in the coal business. they know damn well that those businesses aren't about to hire more miners or give them raises. and they sure as hell aren't going to make it any safer or cleaner.

Throw in some John Wayne swagger and you have a politician who can get the prols to associate that politicians image with people who are actually doing the work, without ever getting their hands dirty.

They all do it. From 'Big John Cornyn' (big bad john), to pot washing Paul 'fuckface' Ryan, they all do it.

miners and heard their stories it convinced him he was right to support his fuhrer-in-law's bid for the presidency. I thought, well, what about all the other people in this country who have hard luck stories to tell? And, how could he have believed Drumpf was going to help those coal miners.

Oh, think I just answered my own question. Kushner's story about the coal miners winning his heart was campain BS. He wanted Drump in because of how it would help his business interests.

one thing they tend to have in common is their employment tells them what to do. They do not like to think about stuff. They do not have to do much when their employer has trained them on the way to do their job, whether operating a forklift, or truck or rifle or pistol.

Being a Democrat requires thinking about stuff. Voting for Trump did not. That is why he beat the other candidates.

A family she's at odds with, most of the time, mind you. She's in her 40s and doesn't live with any of them. I had to ask her - what are you? Eighteen? Just because your family did, did you have to? How would they know? Did they give you a lie-detector test? Did they hold your inheritance over your head? Did they physically walk you into the voting booth and move your hand so it punched the ticket for trump?

Because bullshit. Because having to think for oneself (and take responsibility for it) sometimes sucks, I guess.
