Removing Confederate statues and memorials from public property is one thing, but there has to be a line drawn
when it comes to desecrating memorials, graveyards and markers in honor of the dead.
The only thing that will come of this is that the racists will eventually retaliate and vandalize monuments erected and
dedicated to PoC's.
When the statue was knocked over, its head was decapitated, likely from striking a column in the fall to the ground, said Columbus Police Lt. Clifton Dean. The vandals took the head of the soldier but left the hat, he said.
The vandalism occurred sometime between midnight and 6:30 a.m. Tuesday at the cemetery, where more than 2,000 Civil War soldiers are buried, most of them Confederate soldiers buried there after they died while imprisoned. Officers noticed the broken monument around 7:20 a.m. when doing a check of the cemetery.
Vandalism cases are difficult to prosecute because they are challenging to prove.

(16,199 posts)Taken to its extreme, why have the cemetery at all? These men were traitors.

(16,199 posts)In the case of generals and leaders, these were men, Officers, who had sworn an Oath to the USA and saluted her flag, and yet, turned around and ordered their men to fire on that flag and knock it to the earth below. I have little sympathy for them. But a statue of a soldier in a graveyard of such soldiers appears to be the proper context and a plaque can easily lay out the circumstances of their struggle and fate for all to understand.

(51,308 posts)Absolutely wrong.
Union or Confederate...many of them were just poor men drafted into service. Think what the Vietnamese must think of our young men who burned their villages, killed their livestock, raped their women, and machine gunned their children.
War is an abomination. Period.
