GIMP is free as it is part of the GNU (A recursive acronym: "GNU's Not Unix&quot Project which develops software that is free for anyone to copy, edit, and distribute.

PS not only is expensive, but requires a new computer operating system about every second release.

Another good one is the older version of Paint Shop Pro before it became a memory hog. Version 5 is great.

117. Photoshop Elements is nearly as functional as Photoshop

And a WHOLE lot cheaper. It's a good intro into Photoshop and sometimes Adobe offers a cheap 'upgrade' path to the full version.
