(53,055 posts)How many are simultaneously offended by the term and anxious to apply it to themselves. This includes people who were not protesting racism in Charlottesville and would be unlikely to protest racism anywhere.
The only group of people I can think of whom it might legitimately be applied to are anarchists.
It has been falsely used to describe a group of white men, sometimes called the dirtbag left, whose views are nationalist and despise the Democratic Party for not centering their privilege over the rest of the population. Like the alt-right, they are crucial to Trump's holding power, and they can be seen normalizing him and fascism even today at sites like JPR.
In many ways left and right are outdated terms for describing contemporary politics. Yasha Mounk has talked about how divisions today increasingly break down according to nationalist vs. liberal globalist, which is why we see so many commonalities of beliefs between groups who self-identify as right and left.
