"Odinism" Nazis' new favorite religion. I hadn't heard of this.

I ran across this in a thread about upcoming Nazi marches/parades
https://www.democraticunderground.com/10029459843

The New Religion Of Choice For White Supremacists
From 2015
https://www.google.com/amp/s/thinkprogress.org/the-new-religion-of-choice-for-white-supremacists-8af2a69a3440/amp/

Yet an unsettlingly virulent strain of Odinism has coalesced in the United States over the past few decades, attracting white supremacists who see it as more purely “white” than Christianity.

“Odinism, which is closely related to Asatrú, was much favored in Nazi Germany,” reads a 1998 report on the phenomenon by the Southern Poverty Law Center. “Its Nordic/Teutonic mythology was a bedrock belief for key Third Reich leaders, and it was an integral part of the initiation rites and cosmology of the elite Schutzstaffel (SS), which supervised Adolf Hitler’s network of death camps. Decades later, Odinism also influenced George Lincoln Rockwell’s American Nazi Party.”

“To followers, [the Norse gods] are the big tough white guys who, when they see a woman they want, grab her by the hair and pull her in the cave,” Potok said. “It’s seen as this ultra-male, super muscular religion, which is antithetical to Christianity and Judaism.”

“It’s a comic book religion in a lot of ways,” he added.

Life was hard in the north, and the men were away a lot. So women were often the de facto heads of the family, empowered to make decisions for their husbands. The tradition that the man is the sole head of the household came from Rome.

It's weird that the west doesn't condemn those symbols, but do with the "other" one they appropriated.

They have rewritten the pesky "jewish" part of their xtianity, just like they whitewashed the "aryan" part of Hinduism. Term means noble, they weren't foreign, they weren't white. Gods and goddesses are described as "golden", the color of ash or so dark they were blue.

aligns with my own experience in many ways. In the community I lived in, before I moved out of state, there was a sort of "inter-pagan" faith going on, people trying to connect and be supportive. It lasted about 18 months and fell apart, with the Asatru folk, except for the single black man, withdrawing from the rest.

I know she & her husband were really into the SCA scene as well.

Just little things she said here and there gave me the impression that her husband was really domineering and short-tempered and violence prone. It kind of turned me off, although I'm not sure that's entirely fair.

I've never been really tight with the Pagan community, I'm more of spiritual seeker since renouncing the Christianity of my upbringing. I'm a bad Buddhist and I sometimes attend Pagan events, but I've never actually joined a group officially. I've just noticed that people get a little light-lipped and edgy about the Asatru group, but don't seem anxious to outright condemn them. I think since I'm in a pretty "red" area, there's a feeling Pagans can't afford to ostracize anyone, unless it were to get really out of hand. But, I have to admit this is going into speculation on my part.

because they feature a lot of swashbuckling badass white gods who conquer their enemies with swords and have hot blonde girlfriends - probably the same reasons the original Nazis liked them. The only difference between Norse mythology and that of other cultures is that everybody's white (which was because they were Scandinavian, of course, not because they were inherently superior). The Old Testament and the Hindu myths like the Mahabarata and the Popul Vuh of the Maya, and the Greek and Roman myths have just as much violence and smiting and beheading and fucking, but those myths weren't about white (Aryan) gods or humans.

42. It has its origins in a late nineteenth century mishmash of ideas:
Mon Aug 14, 2017, 07:05 PM
Aug 2017

as the "western" world gradually became aware of "eastern" religious and cultural traditions, there resulted a number of strange syntheses, rather reminiscent of modern "new age" thinking --- theosophy, for example

In Germany, the fusion of theosophist notions, the then-still-new idea of "German nationality" (converted into a religious idea), and popular anti-semitism produced the "Wotan societies"

The mishmash nature of the "Wotanist" synthesis can be seen as "Aryan" (which originally referred to an ancient culture somewhere around northern India) becomes a Germanic self-description (with appropriation of the swastika as an alternative to the Christian cross), while Bismarckian "iron and blood" sloganeering is swirled into Viking Berserker mythology and Wagnerian music and crazy Nietzschean overman-liness, with the ideological objective of demolishing Judeo-Christian notions of mercy, first by exterminating Judaism and with extermination of Christianity planned as the next step

68. As a Norseman...
Thu Dec 24, 2020, 03:11 PM
Dec 2020

It's impossible to be a bigot and follow the Norse faith.

The gods them selves are multiracial (Asir, Vanir, Jotun, Mixtures there of and case in Point Thor, half Jotun).
One of the gods is Trans Gender at will, Trans Species at will, some times both at the same time (how Odin got his horse).
Speaking of Odin, he's Bi.
The goddesses are just as powerful as the guys.

Culturally, most Scandinavian people were not pure Scandinavian. Women had just as much power, if not more, than the men. LGBT were feared as they had a direct line to the gods (culturally as a whole it was discouraged because of inheriting Jarldoms, farms, ect...)

As far as the modern denominations (Asatru, Theodism, Odinism...) largely based off of the Sagas. While they are some of the greatest literary works of all time, they are largely fiction, and those that aren't are greatly embellished (and the two Vinland sagas contradict each other).Odinism has Christian influence behind it.

So, anyone who is a bigot in anyway that says they follow the Norse faith is a liar and a fraud.
