(26,795 posts)Yes, you read that right. The party opposes the teaching of higher order thinking skills because it believes the purpose is to challenge a students fixed beliefs and undermine parental authority.
It opposes, among other things, early childhood education, sex education, and multicultural education, but supports school subjects with emphasis on the Judeo-Christian principles upon which America was founded.
When taken with the other parts of the education platform(see below), it seems a fair conclusion that the GOP Party in Texas doesnt think much of public education. Unfortunately, this notion isnt limited to the GOP in Texas but is more commonly being seen across the country by some of the most strident of school reformers.

(10,715 posts)"The concept of higher order thinking skills (HOTS) became a major educational agenda item with the 1956 publication of Bloom's taxonomy of educational objectives. Within the cognitive domain of Bloom's taxonomy there are six levels: knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Higher order thinking skills are those skills in the top three levels: analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. These three skill levels are important in critical thinking.
There is a notion that students must master the lower level skills before they can engage in higher order thinking. However, the National Research Council objected to this line of reasoning, saying that cognitive research challenges that assumption, and that higher order thinking is important even in elementary school. [1]
Including higher order thinking skills in learning outcomes is a very common feature of standards based education reform..."

(147 posts)Higher order thinking skills can be done cheaper by Chinese and Indian workers! No need for them here. If we had those skills this race would be over.

(17,621 posts)It is no wonder our public schools are in so much trouble. And they will stay that way until we get the politicians, especially Repug politicians, away from them and keep them away.

(36,418 posts)You think things are bad now? Just wait until most everyone but the rich, and those who serve them, have no education past the 8th Grade.
Just like the 19th Century.
