Entrepreneurial action junkie Elon Musk knows that to gin up some excitement, he has only to take to Twitter to start talking about new and fantastic ideas he has in the works. Which he did on Thursday morning, announcing something reliably audacious: A mashup of his Hyperloop concept and new tunneling boring operation.
With no warning, Musk said today that he received verbal government approval to proceed with plans to build a subterranean high-speed transit line connecting New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. The goal would be to shuttle passengers between New York and D.C. in as little as 29 minutes, according to his tweets.
he system would be built by The Boring Company to transport riders from city center to city center, with stations with up to a dozen or more entry/exit elevators in each city.
Along with being unexpected, the new plan takes Musks futuristic concepts into somewhat different directions. Early this year and at the TED conference in May, Musk suggested the Boring Companys focus would be on constructing tunnels to run beneath major urban areas that would transport cars, delivered from street-level elevators, onto automated, sled-like carriers at high speed. The Hyperloop, which Musk first proposed back in 2012, was envisioned as an aboveground tube train, with passenger pods shooting through at speeds of 700 miles an hour or more.
