The source is not one you'd expect. If anyone can tell me the author and source I will bestow praise on them.

The quote is from dialogue in John D. McDonald's Travis McGee #5, A Deadly Shade of Gold (1965).  In 14 minutes the next sentence was added. Remarkable.
