A group of researchers plan to use bone-sniffing dogs in search of human remains that could prove whether Amelia Earhart died a castaway on a remote island in the Pacific.
The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) along with four human-remains-detection dogs, will journey to the uninhabited island of Nikumaroro, where the group believes Earhart may have landed.
Earharts plane vanished on July 2, 1937, on the last leg of her trip around the world. She was flying toward Howland Island in the Pacific, but was running low on gas before she vanished. Three years after her disappearance, 13 human bones were found on Nikumaroro, but were later lost, according to TIGHAR, which has devoted three decades to exploring the castaway theory. That leaves 193 bones still to be found, according to Fredrik Hiebert, National Geographic Societys Archaeologist-in-residence, who is accompanying the group on the expedition.

(14,565 posts)I post on some true crime sites and an Unsolved Mysteries site. Gillespie has been at this for decades, always touting a shoe sole or a bottle as absolute proof of Earhart's fate. Once it was a rivet pattern on a piece of metal, until that notion was shot down by experts from the time period.
I believe the plane ran out of fuel and landed either on or alongside a small island and Earhart survived for a day or a few days, along with her navigator. There is a credible report of a young girl hearing feint obscure radio transmissions and jotting them down. She kept the notes and they read exactly like something from a distressed landing party of that time frame. I believe the young girl who jotted down the notes lived to old age and died within the past few years. There is a website devoted to this but I don't seem to have it bookmarked.
