At 13, I gave a speech at CPAC. Four years later, I renounced conservatives -- and they attacked me for it

Four years ago, at the age of 13, I gave a speech at CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference). To be honest, I had no idea how big a deal it was to make a two-minute appearance on a B-list panel. But the speech blew up, and I became the child star of the right wing like the conservative Macauley Culkin, except Ive never had a drug problem or dated Mila Kunis, unfortunately.

But then, earlier this week, Politico released an interview in which I announced I wasnt a conservative anymore and the proverbial crap hit the fan. Since then, I have been treated by the political right with all the maturity of schoolyard bullies. The Daily Caller, for instance, wrote three articles about my shift, topping it off with an opinion piece in which they stated that I deserved criticism because I wear thick-rimmed glasses and I like Ludwig Wittgenstein. Why dont they just call me four-eyes? These are not adults leveling serious criticism; these are scorned right-wingers showing all the maturity of a little boy. No wonder I fit in so well when I was 13.
I shouldnt be too surprised. Political divisiveness in America today is a childish thing anyway. The never-ending war between the left and the right seems to me like a couple of drunken college boys fighting over which one of their fraternities is cooler. Think about it: Once you join a side, you have to obey the house rules, go to all the parties, and defend your status as a member of the greatest club on campus. And this is what drove me away from conservatism to my admittedly center-left position of independent mindedness (if thats a thing).
I was tired of being a part of the ideological warfare this country is so caught up in. I was tired of the right using me as an example of how young people get what theyre talking about when its obvious that I didnt get what I talking about at all. I mean, come on, I was between 13 and 14 when I was regurgitating these talking points! What does a kid who has never paid a tax bring to the table in a conversation about the burden of taxes? What does a healthy child know about people who cant afford healthcare because of preexisting conditions? No matter how intelligent a person might be, certain political issues require life experience; theyre much more complicated than the black and white frames imposed by partisan America. (And no, my mother and father didnt write my material for me. Youd have to be as paranoid as the birthers to think someones parents would put them up to all that. Have a bit more faith in the human race, man!) I was just a 13-year-old kid spitting up the nonsense hed learned. In the future, a good rule of thumb might be: If youre not old enough to have consensual sex, youre probably not old enough to make consequential political statements.

(14,505 posts)when he said that conservatives act like teenagers. Rush, Hannity, Beck all act like 13 year olds.

Here's another good example of how immature that thinking is for conservatives.

(37,364 posts)would be a great one to have for people like this young man. I like what he has to say about children having no real voice in policy making venues. That problems in society are indeed made by adults and perpetuated by them.

(4,252 posts)I loved when he fit so well with the right wingers at 13 because they are all as mature as a 13 year old.
Learning philosophy can give you a broad range of thinking.
American schools should be teaching the great past writers.
My son sent me this link and it is a great place to learn what to read. The young man who has this website seems well put together.

Since then, Ive met and interviewed hundreds of people who were also profoundly helped by the ideas of Socrates, Plato, Seneca, Epicurus and other great sages. Im fascinated by how contemporary people use philosophy as a way of life, or as the bedrock for communities. And Im interested in how governments use this synthesis of ancient philosophy and modern psychology to build a new politics of well-being (which is the name of the blog I wrote for five years, thats now moved to here).

(20,317 posts)Haha, good line.
On the other hand, his point about the "never-ending (childish) war between the left and right" in this country is, I would say, too glib. It's not that simple. The childish cretins who are criticizing his glasses right now don't have an analog on the left. There are passionate people on both sides and partisans abound, yes-- but it's not a matter of two more or less equal teams chattering at each other.

(111,089 posts)I would suggest that he be given the space to decide what his true political beliefs are to educate himself beyond the present political propaganda. In my opinion, he will see that the majority of distortions and exaggerations come from the conservative side.

(3,056 posts)He really gives me hope for the next generation. As a high school teacher, what I like the most here is that this kid knows how to THINK. Who knows, he may change his politics again before he's out of college. Most people go through some kind of evolution in their politics during their lives. But if he does, it'll be because he's looked at the issues and thought about them, not because someone tells him he's supposed to think one way or the other. And chances are, he'll land on the left side of center, primarily because of that whole "thinking" thing.
I didn't know where this kid was from before reading the article here, but I had seen "the speech". I thought then that this young boy was just spewing out what he had been hearing his whole, young life, and this confirms it. I loved this part: These are not adults leveling serious criticism; these are scorned right-wingers showing all the maturity of a little boy. No wonder I fit in so well when I was 13.
