(367 posts)We see people participating in racist activity while not fully understanding the associations they're involving themselves. Confronting their actions of racism as racism keeps the focus on the subject of concern - racism in this example.
Attempting to discuss an opinion of misunderstanding of terms simply loses ground. It complicates and bogs down the process of asserting the messages that racism is racism, even if calling it white nationalism.
Especially when they don't invite discussion of terms.
Emotions are tied in - in most everyone involved. Some respond by listening, some respond by acting. Those who are seeking to find a message will get it from keeping the focus on the actions of racism.
Attempting to debate terms when others aren't listening is much like standing at the dock telling your loved why they shouldn't go as they're carrying their packed bags up onto the departing ship. You can choose to invest yourself way, but also be prepared to not be heard the way you intend as well be left behind.
