On talk circuit, George W. Bush makes millions but few waves
Since 2009, the former president has given at least 200 paid speeches, typically pocketing $100,000 to $175,000 per appearance.

Since 2009, POLITICO has found, Bush has given at least 200 paid speeches and probably many more, typically pocketing $100,000 to $175,000 per appearance. The part-time work, which rarely requires more than an hour on stage, has earned him tens of millions of dollars.
Relative to the Clintons, though, hes attracted considerably less attention, almost always doing his paid public speaking in private, in convention centers and hotel ballrooms, resorts and casinos, from Canada to Asia, from New York to Miami, from all over Texas to Las Vegas a bunch, playing his part in what has become a lucrative staple of the modern post-presidency.

The former First Couple flew to Japan in a specially equipped Boeing 747, complete with bedroom and shower. They shared the plane, although not the bedroom or the shower, with a retinue of 20 staffers, a dozen Secret Service agents and 229 U.S. military dependents invited along for a free ride to visit their relatives stationed in Japan.

To Help US Veterans Charity, George W. Bush Charged $100,000

The former President was also provided with a private jet to travel to Houston at a cost of $20,000, the officials said.
The charity, which helps to provide specially-adapted homes for veterans who lost limbs and suffered other severe injuries in the war on terror in Iraq and Afghanistan, said the total $170,000 expenditure was justified because the former President and First Lady offered discounted fees and helped raise record amounts in contributions at galas held in 2011 and 2012.
Ex-House speaker Dennis Hastert stripped of Illinois pension

The states General Assembly Retirement Systems board of trustees, which is made up of state lawmakers, voted 5-2 to terminate $755 in monthly payments Hastert was receiving for his three terms in the Illinois House of Representatives, according to Tim Blair, the board's executive secretary.
Hastert, the former GOP House Speaker, is serving a 15-month federal prison sentence for bank fraud related to an attempt to cover up hush-money payments he was making to a former student he sexually abused during his time as a high school wrestling coach and teacher more than 35 years ago.

Thanks, all of those on the left that complained about Obama speaking fee, you've been a great help.
I also added a few articles about past Presidents and how little they've made on the speaking circuit. Which is why someone like Bush has safely kept his pension.
Searching DU to see if anyone had posted about Chaffetz's pension story and found a gem as well. For close to a year you can hold on to your pension. Especially after you're found to have molested children and illegally paid other to keep quiet about your assaults. Just don't be the first black president or they'll come after you with the quickness.

(574 posts)Obama and prior presidents ran and serve with the understanding that there would be a pension. It is one thing to apply it going forward, but absolutely foul to apply it retroactively against those who have already served.

(2,074 posts)when it comes to a black president. White presidents can go on vacation, can get pensions, can get speaking fees. Our first black president: whining from Republicans about every vacation the Obamas ever took, whining from Republicans and some "progressives" about Obama's speaking fees, and now whining about Obama's pension. So...
Dear White People
If you complain about a black president receiving some of the same compensations white presidents took for granted, you may be racist. Think about that.
Love, a fellow white person.

(42,821 posts)Hate to throw a dose of reality at this, but the bill Chaffetz is threatening to reintroduce is one that was co-sponsored last year by Elijah Cummings and passed the House and Senate by voice votes. It would cap the allowance for ex-presidents office expenses at $200,000, with a dollar for dollar reduction in that amount for income earned by the ex president in excess of $400,000. Notwithstanding some bad reporting, the bill as introduced and passed did not tie an ex-president's pension to his earnings -- just the amount of "monetary allowance" for office expenses.
Obama vetoed it, but mostly because it didn't provide for a transition period and thus threatened to result in staff hired by ex-presidents losing their jobs.
Yeah, Chaffetz is a putz and one wonders if he would have bothered to reintroduce his bill (which is not limited in its impact to Obama, but would impact Carter, both Bushes, and Bill Clinton as well) if not for the opportunity presented by the hoopla surrounding Obama's speech fee.
