Jonathan Davies, of the Australian Lawyers Alliance, loses his fuckin mind

... Jonathan Davies (pictured), a criminal and immigration law expert and spokesperson for the ALA, told Lawyers Weekly that Assange can’t rely on diplomatic guarantees that he will not be pursued by the US if he goes to Sweden.

“The US is not in a position to give any assurances because its system is so vicious,” Davies said.

“The quasi-military judicial system in the US is scraping the bottom of the barrel to look for a way to turn what is essentially a politically-motivated act to one that deliberately seeks to strike at the heart of the sovereignty of the US” ...

“There is no reason why a Swedish court could not be convened in the UK and a Swedish prison sentence be served in the UK – or Australia for that matter – following a guilty verdict in a Swedish court,” he said ...

Bless Jon's pointy little head! Since lots and lots of people can probably explain just "why a Swedish court could not be convened in the UK," the natural guess is that Jon's been drinkin too much Tooheys and sittin out in the midday sun without a hat

I don't know that I would compare Awlaki and Assange. I can't see how it helps msanthrope Jul 2012 #5

Isn't he aware there's a difference between the military system and the regular one? Hard to believe anyone could get through law school in a common law country and not know that difference.

It's "guarantees" and promises have been broken time and again.

many here reasoned that the actions carried out by the US were acceptable because Awlaki was tried (in absentia) in Yemen.

You can't have it both ways.

I documented that the magistrate court's findings of fact indicated that Assange fled Sweden the day before his interview...after his Swedish attorney advised him that it was likely that a DNA sample would be collected.

His supporters don't seem to understand that when you flee a jurisdiction, they stop extending you courtesies. With those findings of fact, he's in deep shit.
