ACLU Sends Powerful Message To Trump With First Amendment Billboards
Theyre written in Arabic, Spanish and English.

An ACLU billboard in Times Square features the First Amendment in Arabic.
The American Civil Liberties Union is sending a powerful, multilingual message to President Donald Trump about civil rights by posting the First Amendment in English, Spanish and Arabic on billboards across the country.
The goal of its We the People campaign is to send a message to Trump that Americans rights ― particularly those of immigrants, Latinx and Muslims ― are protected by the Constitution.
Trump came to power on a wave of anti-immigrant sentiment, and it was particularly bad when it came to Muslims, ACLU communications staffer Stacy Sullivan told The Huffington Post. We thought this would be a good time to remind the public ― and Trump ― that the First Amendment applies to Muslims and Latinos, and everyone else in this country, too.
The First Amendment protects peoples right to practice their religion without facing discrimination. It also protects free speech, a free press and the right to protest.
The signs simply write out the language of the First Amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

(7,681 posts)14th too when they can get away with it. Especially at the state level.
If we take them to court on these issues and it goes all the way to the SCOTUS, now they have a Roy Bean in place to do their bidding.

(2,555 posts)bigly rights ready to go. You don't need those old rights, they just get in the way. Would you buy a 200 year old car? No! So that ancient bill of rights is obsolete. I will give you shine new rights that are soooooo much bigly better you will be worn out being "right".

(4,304 posts)Preferably with the clause about "peaceably to assemble" in bold print. Underlined.
In case you missed it, while the corporate media was gushing about how PEE-residential the Shitgibbon was in ordering missile strikes in Syria, we had a small protest here in Cowford (Jacksonville's original name). The response by one particular troll and the law enforcement officers on the scene shows their disregard of this essential First Amendment right.
In these situations, police are privileged to create a small geographic separation between protest and counter-protest to allow both sides to enjoy their First Amendment rights, while avoiding situations pretty much exactly like what happened. Snow was allowed to harangue Friday nights protesters without exception until it was too late.
In the aftermath of an incident that involved numerous camera angles showing cops beating civilians, including a young, deaf African-American man who was briefly hospitalized for his injuries, we all got to see our city splashed across international headlines. Which probably isnt how anyone wanted to spend the weekend.
