You know what republicans screamed after they failed to adequately fund embassy security and an Al Qaeda affiliate killed four people in Libya?
BENGHAZI! BENGHAZI!
BENGHAZI! BENGHAZI!
Trump screamed Benghazi" at every single campaign event. The only word he said more times was emails". The GOP repeated it over and over at rallies, campaign events, and on social media. They dragged one of the victims' mother in front of an endless parade of cameras and featured her at their convention.
You may be the most politically disengaged person in Americabut youve heard of Benghazi.
snip//
The raid occurred after 5pm, which was too late for Trump. He refused to go to the Situation Room. Maybe he wanted to watch Finding Nemo so he could follow the sequel hed watch a few days later. Who knows.
What I do know is that it was a massacre. I use the term "massacre" because the entire village was practically wiped out.
The name of the village in the Yemen raid is was Yakla.
The facts of the deadly botched Yakla raid entailed the following:
57 people, including nine children under the age of 13 were killed and five were wounded
Death of Navy SEAL Chief Petty Officer William Owens
Destruction of a $70 million Osprey aircraft
Failure to capture the Al Qaeda leader, which was the mission of the raid

As Democrats, we dont have to engage in phony, sanctimonious platitudes about the value of American life or engage in the wild-eyed conspiracy theories that the knuckledraggers of the GOP did for the Benghazi tragedy.
But dammit, we could AT LEAST bother to bring it up. Here we are less than one month later and already, its pretty-much forgotten.
You had better believe if this was under Hillary, Yakla" would be in our lexicon as much as "Benghazi". But then again, if this were Hillary, this disaster wouldnt have happened.

(574 posts)Discussions in the comments section signal upcoming problems for democrats. Democrats should NOT assume that shared outrage will translate into votes for old school "leaders" with proven track records for failing to EFFECTIVELY lead and/or fight for liberal values.

(49,113 posts)The raid
Secretary of Defense James Mattis and General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, presented the plan over dinner at the White House, on 25 January 2017, to President Trump, his son-in-law Jared Kushner, and his political strategist Steve Bannon. President Trump approved the plan then and there.[7] Michael Flynn, National Security Advisor to President Trump, was also at the dinner, but the decision did not go through the normal National Security Council (NSC) channels, through which heads or deputy heads of all agencies with a stake in the operation would be convened.[17] US military officials stated that the assault went forth without sufficient intelligence, ground support, or adequate backup preparations.
The International Crisis Group's senior analyst on the Arabian Peninsula, April Longley Alley, described the raid as "a good example of what not to do": "The raid ignores the local political context, to the detriment of an effective counter-terrorism strategy."[35]
Karen J. Greenberg, the director of Fordham University's Center on National Security, said that Nawar al-Awlaki's death will be used by al Qaeda propagandists: "The perception will be that it's not enough to kill al-Awlaki that the U.S. had to kill the entire family," she said.[32][36]
Two hours of agony.
Trump said we must kill the families. The one promise he has kept.

(9,221 posts)Benghazi worked because it was first introduced to elect Romney in 2012 and conveniently was the only weapon against Hillary who was super popular when she left the administration in 2013. Those committees wound up exposing the email server and the rest is Russia.

(49,113 posts)Republicons have been framing the issues by controlling the language since the mid 1970s.
It's about time Democrats started doing the same in an organized way. George Lakoff, Noam Chomsky, and others have been trying to wake up Democrats to this.
It's why estate taxes got renamed "death taxes". It's why "death panels" has such currency. It's why Republicons call spending they like "investments" and "Congress will pay for it" (the Wall boondoggle); spending they don't like gets termed "a burden on taxpayers" and "the taxpayers will pay for it" (education, science).
It's coupled with relentless repetition of terms by way of media interviews and Congressional investigations. Hence "emails" is on everyone's lips when Hillary is mentioned.
Democrats must not cede the language to Republicons and must push progressive and liberal language, whenever possible.

(9,221 posts)It was really all they had because they had nothing on Obama and Hillary would have been formidable.
Now there is so much to get these guys on that are HUGE. Which would get the most support across the aisle? That ought to be the drumbeat issue. IMHO.

Taking part in the Fox News GOP debate last night, the billionaire was asked about General Michael Hayden saying that the military would refuse to follow illegal orders such as the intentional killing of terrorists families.
Mr Trump said: They wont refuse, theyre not going to refuse me believe me.

(101,442 posts)It's an odd affectation that I notice a few Americans use when writing. It seems a bit condescending to the reader - as if the author is stopping to say "yes, that's right dear, it's a number".
If it were the other way round, in some vital document (especially a hand-written one), I might see a reason for it - write 'thirty one' after '31', in case the '1' looks like a '7' in their handwriting.

(101,442 posts)They don't care how many Yemenis (even if one was legally an American citizen too) were killed; they assume they all supported "the bad guys". They think of the dead sailor as a hero. Those on the fence about Trump are unlikely to care much. To us, it was a botched job, so it's in the list of Trump's misdeeds. But I don't think we'd convince many of those in doubt by using the name endlessly (remember, the Republicans did that to target the gullible; you can't use the same tactics to win the non-gullible).

If after all those years of "Benghazi Benghazi Benghazi!" Hillary had decided to act on this village as well, to get a little toughness cred or as a wag the dog from most likely already fomenting impeachment talk. For whatever reasons....
and it had gone just as badly? My gawd they'd blow the roof off with their maniacal screaming vitriol.

BUT, with trump, there are 3 or 4 outrages a day. It's hard to keep up with his shit-storm. To be fair, I think we are decent job getting the word out about his Russian connections.
