January 27, 2017
Former President Barack Obama spent months refusing to comment on who his daughter Malia cast her ballot for last November when she voted in her first ever election, but did reveal two weeks ago in his final White House press conference that she and sister Sasha were disappointed by Donald Trumps victory.
And this past Monday, just four days after her father vacated the Oval Office, Malia made it clear just how disappointed she was in the new commander-in-chief by joining a rally protesting his plans to revive the Dakota Access pipeline project.
The 18-year-old student, who will be heading off to Harvard University later this year, was one of approximately 100 people who gathered on Main Street at the Sundance Film Festival to let it be known how upset she was with President Trumps plan to move forward with the controversial transport system.
The group braved the blistering cold and heavy snowfall as they held up signs reading Exist. Resist. Rise. and Impeach corporate control.
That first sign expressed the groups solidarity with Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, while the second expressed their displeasure with the Sundance Film Festival for allowing Chase Bank to be a sponsor of their event due to the fact that they are invested in the pipeline.

(3,557 posts)However I just learned that presidential children don't get Secret Service for life after their parent leaves office.
That would have made a hell of a scene - especially if she got arrested!

(46,166 posts)Not that I would urge her to go up there. But I was imagining how it would be if she did.

(61,710 posts)Protestors at Standing Rock have been cropdusted (my term, not hers) by the goons and henchmen working for the big energy corps. Said they have tested positive for pesticides on their skin and they've had varying degrees of breathing problems.
I don't know if she was for real. Has anyone else heard this and from a reputable source? I hope Malia will be okay. Good on her.

(13,527 posts)go-to source on Standing Rock - she's a reporter for Indian Country Today, among other things, and was living at SR until about 2-3 weeks ago...she has definitely mentioned the pesticide spraying (via a crop duster a while back)...finding anything in like, Bismarck newspapers? Not gonna happen.

(22,676 posts)Republicans say it's okay to run you down in a vehicle and kill you.
Rep. Keith Kempenich (R) introduced the North Dakota bill, which states that if a driver "unintentionally" causes injury or death to someone blocking traffic on a roadway, then the driver will not be liable for damages.
Kempenich said he was spurred to act after Dakota Access Pipeline protesters last year moved to block public roadways, scaring some of his constituents.
"It turned from a protest to basically terrorism on the roadways, and the bill got introduced for people to be able to drive down the roads without fear of running into somebody and having to be liable for them," he told CNN.
So while you're dead and others are maimed, it'll be up to the prosecution to prove that the driver killed you intentionally. If they claim it was an accident that they drove over you and backed up and drove over your dead body again, they could get off if this Republican bill becomes law.
Thus, be careful out there Malia.
