General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIs anyone else concerned that the change of the National Guard leader might mean for the March?
I keep playing out this scenario in my head: Some "event," real or invented, among protestors (particularly some of the asshole anarchists - or even agent provocateurs) at the inauguration gets labled "terrorism,"and give Red Don the excuse to declare "a state of emergency."
During the night (after the balls, of course) his guy in the National Guard sets up barriers around the roads and bridges leading into DC, as they did on 9/11, preventing people from entering the city for the entire day.
Does anyone know how possible this scenario is? I know that he keeps pushing the limits on what is ethical, but what if he sees this is his opportunity for a first big show of military force, and slap "nasty" women in the face by shutting down the largest march in history, which is likely threatening to dwarf his inaugural crowd?
Wouldn't the GOP simply go along? Simply repeat the talking point that martial law was justified by events, as it was on 9/11?
All while Donald helicopters up to his penthouse in NYC, tweeting away, with his private security detail now completely "justified."
Any thoughts?

(28,394 posts)Another thread suggested that the 2700 NG members could point their rifles at the protestors. WTF?
The crowd is going to be made up almost entirely of women and children. Mothers, grandmothers, probably some great-grandmas. Unless some "outside agitators" show up on the fringes, there is not going to be "a state of emergency." It is going to be peaceful.

(32,640 posts)I was simply in the crowd, no sign, no buttons, just observing. In a crowd that was about a block away from the parade route.
We were detained for 45 minutes. A woman with a stroller cried and begged them to let her through, and one guy backed her up with a baton.
Also - I wasn't talking about an incident at the march - but an event at the inauguration the day before the march.

(10,141 posts)Sorry to all the naysayers but this just creeps me out.
All sorts of unpleasant scenarios keep playing in my head.
I am hoping that all the protesters on the 20th and all the women on the march on the 21st are safe.
Everybody keep filming.
I lived through Kent State and the 1968 democratic convention. After hearing about the dismissal of the head of the National Guard, I have really bad feelings.

(6,324 posts)A successor hasn't been named and even if one had that person wouldn't be sworn in immediately. All that will happen is that the deputy commander will take over.
On top of that all the NG personnel assigned to work the inauguration will be under the command of the DHS and the other civilian led Federal agencies in charge of security, so the head of the D.C. NG does not have an actual command role in the operation:
