IMO, it would end up in the House and even if they chose Trump a real point would have been made
If the House chose Trump and things go kerblooey, we have a record of who voted for him and who did not.

(2,120 posts)You would have a record of what States voted for him. Same as we have now.

(2,120 posts)The Constitution says each State delegation gets one vote. How each state decides to do that is not specified in the Constitution and is left up to the State delegation. So it seems it depends on the laws in each state.

(2,120 posts)Voted. I think the Electors votes are public and archived.

(22,651 posts)Republicans would prefer t(R)ump stays there. Americans will have the unfit-bagger to complain about, they can always 'arrest any person who crosses the legal lines'. Republicans can move on with bleeding anything 'profitable' out of America.

If he and his boot-licking supporters try to change THAT in order to "make America great again," then what's left won't actually be America anymore.

(8,891 posts)Salon reports that a member of the Electoral College told them that Donald Trumps campaign is threatening political reprisal against any Republican elector not voting for him next week.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the elector said We have gotten reports from multiple people that the Donald Trump campaign is putting pressure on Republican electors to vote for him based on
future political outcomes based on whether they vote fro Donald Trump or not.
Salon adds that:
The elector emphasized that these reports had come straight from the Republican electors themselves, with the threats steering clear of violence but instead focusing on career pressure.
Its all political, basically, the elector said. If Trump becomes the president, hes going to be able to put pressure on the state parties and they wont be involved anymore.

(8,998 posts)Pence is a horrible option but perhaps less damaging though I think he would need to radically alter his cabinet choices.
Really change those picks.
Good for them. Every one will be on a Trump hit list.

(91 posts)Can't the EC voters chose a compromise candidate like Mitt Romney that would be acceptable to the House? If that is the case, I would fine with that as much as I wanted Hillary to win. But at this point, I feel it is important to choose someone who won't threaten the safety of the country.

(3,283 posts)believe it is an exercise in futility. I don't think there are enough people in the House or Senate that see this as a crises even if the electors would give them the opportunity to change this. Partisan politics would prevail and tRump would still be elected. IMO.

(8,891 posts)-- regardless of whether there is any real chance of blocking Trump, the electors should vote exactly how they want in order to join the army of small protest acts that collectively help to undermine the legitimacy of the incoming president. Writes Beutler:
Not only is there some precedent for this kind of protest voting, but it, and similar statements of no-confidence from within official channels, will be an important source of resistance to a presidency that poses an enormous threat to small-l liberalism. There are certainly norms that shouldnt be ignored for the purposes of weakening Trump, but this isnt one of them.
Trump opponents will ultimately need a clear resistance strategy, but in a leaderless environment, they have been floundering in the dark for more than a month now, grasping for short-term anti-Trump resistance tactics.
None of them has been particularly effective, but we have learned through these efforts that Trump is highly sensitive about the fact that he lost the popular vote by a margin of millions, and his Electoral College margin is historically low. He and his supporters want to claim a mandate, and feel threatened by the awareness that he will preside over a term of minority rule.
Thinning that electoral majority even further, through GOP protest votes, would be a small but useful public testament to both his unfitness for office and the lack of public confidence in his ascent to power. For the time being, this is what official resistance to Trump will look like: numerous battlefronts, some invisible, each inconsequential, but that have a real impact when taken together.

(182 posts)... in terms of actually keeping Trump out of the white house.
In order to avoid a President Trump, there needs to be 39 REPUBLICAN electors, sworn to elect Trump, who vote against him. ( then it will go to the house of representatives, who will pick a Republican for president, but a more sane Republican. In relative terms, of course.)
They will not be persuaded by the likes of us. The more it becomes a partisan issue, Democrat versus Republican, the more they will stick like flies on rotten meat to the official Republican nominee.
The official Democrats are keeping very very quiet about this. They have been blasted for their passivity, but in this case maybe they are actually being smart!
Lord, I hope someone can keep this madman away from the nuclear codes or (worse) the army drones. A vindictive nut case with no self-control running the FBI? A crook with a history of cheating all his business associates and all his customers with his hands on the US Treasury? Save us!

History will think better of us the more we resist. The worse the impending Trump Administration turns out to be, the better we will look for having opposed it--peacefully and loudly.
