Chip and Joanna Gaines series Fixer Upper is one of the most popular shows on HGTV. The couple has recently graced the cover of People magazine; their book, The Magnolia Story, has been on the New York Times best-seller list for five weeks; and they were the subject of a long profile in Texas Monthly that credited them with revitalizing the city of Waco, Texas, where the show is set and where their businesses are located. The couple are riding a wave of success, largely due to their charm and appeal. Joannas design aesthetic large kitchen islands, open-concept floor plans, and shiplap is one of the shows stars; Chips goofiness his willingness to call himself fat, his sadness and terror when he has to deliver bad news to a client during construction, and his buoyant attitude is the other.
They have built a small empire, and they are not done yet. They have a huge retail space in Waco, as well as a new magazine, the Magnolia Journal; they have a real estate company; Joanna has a paint line and a home decor line. Season 4 of Fixer Upper begins Nov. 29.
They are also, as they detail in The Magnolia Story, devout Christians Joanna has spoken of and written about her conversations with God. (God told her both to close her store to spend time with her children, and then to reopen it a few years later.) Their church, Antioch Community Church, is a nondenominational, evangelical, mission-based megachurch. And their pastor, Jimmy Seibert, who described the Gaineses as dear friends in a recent video, takes a hard line against same-sex marriage and promotes converting LGBT people into being straight.
So are the Gaineses against same-sex marriage? And would they ever feature a same-sex couple on the show, as have HGTVs House Hunters and Property Brothers? Emails to Brock Murphy, the public relations director at their company, Magnolia, were not returned. Nor were emails and calls to HGTVs PR department.

Sad. Just another hateful fundy couple wrapped in a nice veneer. I wonder what their sponsors would think of their beliefs? I think Season 4 might be the last season. Here's hoping.....

(4,613 posts)I knew nothing about them when I first started watching, but considering all of the kids and a certain "air" about them, I figured they had to be "churchies."
I'll bet they're Drumpf voters, too.

you don't see the canadians being this way.

(3,076 posts)I hate that too when people put their families ahead of their job. How else are their children going to learn that it is the job that takes precedence, not them

(89,250 posts)That'd different and opposite of putting family first.

(37,748 posts)Creative framing of the issue. It certainly validates your consistent narrative. I'd pretend "children going to learn that it is the job that takes precedence, not them" is the premise as well if it suited my bias. I'd also allege otherwise with a pretense of sincerity, and continue to post false stories as flame bait... you may or may not do that however.

(1,429 posts)You know some dodgy shit is going to soon follow. That said I really would like to hear from their own mouths their feelings and beliefs about us LGBTQ. Their church is a hate monger on the subject but maybe they disagree. I am really doubtful, but still, I like concrete proof.

(1,735 posts)Some people believe differently than I do, but keep it private, I say leave them alone. Stigmatizing someone because of personal beliefs is unamerican . That's what the trumpites do.

(7,188 posts)I don't think the Gaines should be forced to have a same sex couple on the show - it is not discrimination because they don't. Just don't watch - tell other people not to watch and not to support their business. Frankly, the fact they were devout Christians has always been known. Since the first season.
There are shows I don't watch because I don't agree with the stars. It is not always because of their politics.
I don't watch a show with Charlie Sheen in it because I think he is disgusting.
I did not watch the swamp guys (forget the name) because I didn't like them.
I don't watch the Kardashians because well, its the Kardashians.
I don't watch the new show of the guy who was in Home Improvement (Tim ....) because he is a Republican and bashes Obama on the new show every chance he gets.
I watch the Property Bros and other home improvement shows because I like they have same sex and interracial couples and situations.

(28,876 posts)...then the Gaines' religion is no longer being kept private. It's being broadcast on the show.
Personally, I tired of the show, and her design, fairly quickly.

(15,317 posts)I didn't notice other overtly religious overtones on the show, but I only watched a couple of episodes.

(15,317 posts)Telling people to shut up and not criticize open and public media is just about the most un-American thing there is, American flag-having DUer. It goes both ways. People are free to disagree with the criticism, too.

(24,461 posts)And using a mythology book to hide behind and justify hatred makes it even more despicable.
So, yeah, they're getting stigmatized. Get out of the 20th Century. You want a theocracy, Iran's that way.

(5,417 posts)They are on a show about home improvement. When I watch their show, I want them to take a home, and improve it.
They have never talked about politics or religion on their show, so I don't care what they believe.

(3,076 posts)The Gaines' are clearly dangerous, and should be taken off the airways. At the very least a boycott of their program, their products, and their sponsors is in order
