Cyber-protection in the coming era...how to do it? Is it even possible?

No, I'm not talking about viruses or trojans. I'm talking about the very real threat to our Internet freedoms posed by the incoming administration.

I would expect, at the very least, for cybersurveillance of our Internet communcations to increase drastically. There also exists, IMHO, the possibility that the administration, if worst comes to worst, will simply turn the Internet into a Chinese-styled "walled garden," blocking sites they deem unacceptable, or blocking out certain people's ability to access the Internet at all.

What are the steps we can take to protect this from happening? For example, would an overseas "anonymizing" VPN be a good idea? Would there be ways for a Trump-controlled government to circumvent such measures, and are there countermeasures available? Are there other steps we should be taking? I think there's a real need for progressives to have a "sticky" site of thread they can go to for this information, especially since many, although "computer-literate" (to use that quaint phrase) are relatively uninformed when it comes to security issues.

Lastly, I hope the administrators at this and other opposition sites have a backup plan to move the site to foreign hosting...

So, you're saying it's completely hopeless and we should do nothing? regnaD kciN Nov 2016 #3

It will be nearly impossible to trace or even knowing it's being done if they ever do hit those switches.

Way more advanced than I can keep up with.

I'd definitely continue to call it out.
