Wow. GOP opinion writer for NYT says GOP is offensive, anti-intellectual, propagandistic, and
ruined. David Brooks' article is half right, but then goes on to discuss his optimism for the party (without apparent basis). But best of all are the many insightful public comments on the article that correct, expand, and challenge Brooks' assertions. Don't miss those.

He points out three ways the GOP has come to an intellectual crisis (his reader comments identify several more):
...talk radio, cable TV, and internet personalities promote perpetual hysteria, simple mind polemics, and social resentment in order to appeal to mass markets and rake in the money
...politics are valued more highly than anything else
...anti-government stances blinded the party to real social and world problems that should have been addressed
