We modern humans busted out of northeast Africa in fairly small numbers and quickly took over the world, eliminating all other hominids.
Our path through the middle east into Europe is pretty well understood from archaeological evidence, but our bigger undertaking of sweeping through India and Asia had to wait for molecular biology to be well understood.
The reason we lack a archaeological record of early human excursions to the east is that we (humans) followed the coasts and the sea-level was lower back then. All evidence our coastal settlements in the Indian subcontinent ended up underwater.
I posted this factoid because I love things like that... the little pragmatic things that shape what we know.
(And also because it reminds me of the end of Planet of the Apes)
