I realize this is a generalization and there are exceptions however when it comes to military cuts:
Republicans will cut troop pay and benefits.
Democrats will cut fatcat defense contractors.

OP
I would like to see them cut about 80% of it (for a start) and then bicker about where.

I doubt that it will/would happen. But, yes, I'd still want it cut (at least) 80%.

The "defense" industry as you call it keeps thousands of small businesses open.

That would be sad. But, not nearly as sad as manufacturing weapons to kill people with.

I'm sure that will comfort those millions as they try to find their next meal...

Many of these people are skilled workers or professionals who make up the middle class.

Do you live in an alternate reality?

(50,414 posts)7. I doubt that this country will ever cut the military by 80%.
I also doubt that the "defense" industry wouldn't retool and start producing something useful.

Without regulations that defense related hardware and components be US made, these companies would go under against the competition in Asia. And the larger employers would likely just sell off the defense side and lay everyone off. There would be no retooling.
