Cutting Military Spending

I realize this is a generalization and there are exceptions however when it comes to military cuts:

Republicans will cut troop pay and benefits.
Democrats will cut fatcat defense contractors.

1. I would like to see them cut about 80% of it (for a start) and then bicker about where.

Many of these people are skilled workers or professionals who make up the middle class.

I also doubt that the "defense" industry wouldn't retool and start producing something useful.

8. The "defense" industry as you call it keeps thousands of small businesses open.

Without regulations that defense related hardware and components be US made, these companies would go under against the competition in Asia. And the larger employers would likely just sell off the defense side and lay everyone off. There would be no retooling.
