I don't like the term or the insinuation that anyone follows these 'leaders'

(16,867 posts)specifically is when they call someone a gay or GLBT leader. When did we have the elections, because no one told me. It seems that every minority group has spokesmen that the media go to whenever there's some controversy involving that group.
I think that the primary reason media single out these unofficial spokespeople to opine on issues and speak for 'their' minority group is that so many reporters are just plain lazy. It's a hell of a lot easier to call up Al Sharpton and get his opinion on an issue than it is to go to a black neighborhood and interview the common person on the street. This is just another way that media distort issues and public opinion.

minority communities often need different leaders than elected leaders, since more often than not we are not represented in elected leaders.

(5,644 posts)There is NO one person that speaks for us all. Where the hell did that come from anyway? Who are the leaders of the White, Hispanic, Native Americans, etc...who speaks for them.
