Keep hydrated in the heat.

Keep up on the water and electrolytes. Fruit and greens with hole grains are also better in this wicked heat, avoid the fatty stuff.

Keep an eye out on the person next to you.

Keep it safe in Philly!

See ya round.

While we hear a lot about staying hydrated, we hear very little about water intoxication. So, when it happened to me, I was clueless.

I thought, "What's going on? All I've had today so far is water." Luckily, my brain was still functioning enough to have that thought spur me to google "too much water."

Intersperse water with electrolyte drinks with a 2 3rds water 1 3rd electrolyte ratio. Even if you have a hot job and are somewhat acclimated to the heat be careful...you may not have many symptoms of impending heat exhaustion if you are acclimated, and then you are overcome quickly. If you stop urinating regularly or especially stop sweating, grab a rock in the shade and hydrate hydrate hydrate. If you start feeling the liquid slosh in your belly, stop for a bit. Water toxicity is a real thing. You need lots of downtime AND fluids in the heat.

You can also get powdered electrolyte mix for adding to water. The oranges, grapefruit and bananas also put electrolytes into your system.

I generally do all of the above.

When I buy electrolyte drink I save the bottle for a canteen for a few days in hot locations. Refill when electrolyte is half gone.

A pinch of salt per pint of water would do the same thing as powdered electrolyte mix.

over a period of time instead of drinking large quantities quickly. Also if you hold water in your mouth for a while before swallowing, it rehydrates the membranes directly. I use that trick when hiking in either high heat and/or to stretch out the water supply.
