and somehow I doubt the god addled bible bangers will be welcome there for at least a few years. That is an improvement, albeit an incremental one.

In so many ways Libertarians are just Repubs on steroids. Sure, they don't go apeshit over the Christo-fascist crap, but their economic and social policies are like Reagan +++. Plus most of them are died in the wool states' rightists wanting to destroy the federal govenment altogether.

...It's bad enough that the Repubs rightward shift has given the Democratic party carte blanche excuse to shift rightward on economic issues. With the Republicans gone they'll claim they have to appeal to everyone, include the worst elements of the right.

No thanks. I want them to exist but to just be completely incompetent and ineffective. Oh wait....

Not only is it good to have competing (GOOD) ideas, all people need to feel represented in government in order for them to want to participate. At this point a single party would look like the party of blue dogs in order to satisfy a very large constituency.

Disagreement is not a bad thing when it is negotiated civilly, and is actually necessary for good ideas to flourish.

Aside from that, a single party that is in bed with monied interests (as are the major players among Democrats) would be way worse than it already is.
