...would you please stop saying shit like 'some say' we should have let Detroit go bankrupt! Mitt Fucking Romney said it. So you say that he said it, Barack. Get your message out to the people who aren't political junkies, so they will know the truth. The political junkies know what you mean, so you don't need to convince them of squat. The vast majority of voters out there aren't tuned in 24-7 to the national political discussion on cable news and in the political blogosphere. They're too busy living their busy lives, and may just catch a 30 sound bite or two each day to help them make up their minds. So when you've got the opportunity to form that sound bite...make sure you are plainspoken and crystal clear: Mitt Romney said 'let Detroit go bankrupt'. Not 'some say'. It's important, it's crucial, to make this distinction as clear as the light of day. Same goes for when Obama says 'some in congress' are being obstrucntionist or whatever.... No, Barack. It's Republicans in congress. Republicans. Say it. Over and over again.!!
Enough with the subtle, nudge nudge wink wink approach to calling Romney and other repukes out for their bullshit and outright lies!!
Aargh, I tells ya...

(3,112 posts)I did hear him say what a nice family man Mitt Romney was though. And yes, he mentioned Romney by name a little later during some critical comments. My point though is that too much of the time he doesn't do this....and IMO it's always a missed opportunity to connect with voters.

If you think about the entire speech, it was future oriented, and the overall tone was intentionally positive.
He drew some stark contrasts, and then pivoted to his positive vision versus the GOP's vision.

(22,239 posts)I however, think he does so. He's a pretty decent campaigner. I'm sure as we get closer to November the Rmoney name will be used more frequently.

(1,569 posts)You can't have it both ways. If the masses aren't tuned in to the 24/7 political theater, then unless Obama makes a huge gaffe, it doesn't matter much what he says. If they are paying attention, like you, then they know he is getting a dig in against Romney but not giving Romney even a chance to respond without implicitly saying "Hey, it was me who said that".
The campaigns are really just idling at this point. As the conventions get closer, you'll see both candidates calling out the other. By september, it should be obvious to everyone what the talking points and attack vectors are for both candidates on pretty much the entire range of issues.

(3,112 posts)Because the masses who aren't tuned in 24/7 will nonetheless be exposed to the day-end sound bite. 'Mitt Romney said let Detroit go bankrupt' sounds a helluva lot more powerful than 'some say'. That's my point.
I too expect that as the campaign works its way closer and closer to November, Obama will name check Romney probably at every turn. But why not do it now too? I hear the media also saying the campaigns are idling, but I honestly don't hear idling rhetoric from Romney. He doesn't say 'some say' when he attacks Obama...he goes right after him. And look at the polls now....they are really tightening. Some of that is due to Romney getting the right to rally around him now that he is the nominee...but some of it is also due to him being very aggressive, personally agressive, against the President.

I doubt they are bothered one bit about his whole bi-partisan, "conciliatory" approach to politics. And they really don't care all that much about which of the two candidates wins.

(2,825 posts)He's done that since the Republicans took control. I wish he could just bring himself to say "REPUBLICAN Congress".
What is Congress's popularity now? 13%?
There are too many good Democrats in Congress who don't deserve to be lumped together with the GOP.

(10,893 posts)I did hear former SF Mayor Willie Brown tell Jennifer Granholm that it is wiser for Obama to not call Mitt Rob-me out directly by name as much until the conventions (or something like that), since Ron Paul still has yet to drop out. Brown said that Obama should keep the Republicans guessing about exactly who he is attacking.
I'm not sure if I agree with that. But as far as Congress goes...Obama should definitely call out the chief culprits (which are the GOPhers) instead of grouping the Democrats in there along with them. With the exception of the Blue Dogs, the Democrats aren't the ones trying to get the president booted out of office. He's been in office over 3 years...he should know who his enemies and allies are.

(20,450 posts)campaign trail. Thing is, it wasn't just Mitt Romney. It's his surrogates. It's the Republican Party who is onboard with this as well.
I understand that in certain contexts he can't explicitly say Mitt due to the political ramification. But he's fired up on the campaign trail, and he calls them all out by name.
I'm more frustrated that he rarely if ever called out the REPUBLICANS in Congress who are obstructing things. He merely that accuses "Congress," not necessarily the Republicans who are responsible for blocking shit.
That's what you should be mad about.

(20,600 posts)This is a little different than what the topic is, but it reminded me of that.
Maybe Obama thinks if he blames republicans by name, he might lose some republican votes. But that seems pretty flimsy, I doubt many republicans are going to vote for him.
It will be interesting if he ever uses republicans by name during the campaign, it will be kind of pathetic if he doesn't.

I understand your frustration though! I wish politics were more like that Dudley Moore movie, Crazy People, where he decides to be completely honest in advertising ALL the time.

(4,104 posts)Obama does use euphemisms. I'm especially sick of him saying that congress is doing nothing. No, fool, the Republicans are doing nothing.
Bush was never shy about this. He'd just blame the Democrats, mentioning them by name.
